🔴 The crisis of liberalism
✏️ Prabhat Patnaik
Many would argue that the objective of socialism that the political philosophy, Marxism, puts forward, has in the present context become somewhat more difficult to achieve; but this, while explaining the present weakening of the Left, does not constitute any crisis for Marxism. The political philosophy called liberalism however is facing a crisis in the sense that the objective it puts forward for the achievement of what it perceives as human freedom is logically impossible to achieve in a world which liberalism itself holds dear; in other words there is a logical contradiction within itself which has arisen in the course of the development of the economy and to which it has no answer. The crisis that liberalism faces is of this nature.

In Jerusalem's occupied Mea Shearim neighborhood, Orthodox Jews chanted "Free Palestine" towards police. This district houses several Orthodox Jewish communities who identify as Palestinian Jews and reject cooperation with the Israeli state. Since the war between Israel and Gaza erupted, the area has seen frequent protests met with crackdowns by the occupying forces' police.

On this day, 11 May 1923, after months of agitation 150 mostly women rent strikers who had been jailed in the Mexican town of Veracruz the previous year were freed by the governor.
The women had organised strikes in detention, and fought with prison guards, while workers outside threatened a general strike for their freedom.
The tenants left the jail in groups of 10, the women wearing cream dresses and straw hats with red ribbons, while their supporters sang songs, shouted slogans and set off firecrackers.
The group then paraded through the main streets of the city to the office of the renters' union, where they declared their commitment to continue their direct action against landlords.

If Socialism can only be realized when the intellectual development of all the people permits it, then we shall not see Socialism for at least five hundred years.

On this day, 12 May 1918, blind anti-Nazi resistance activist Yakov Batyuk was born near Volyn, Ukraine.Batyuk lost his sight in an accident as a child. He later graduated from school and university, and became a lawyer, residing and working in Nizhyn. After the outbreak of World War II, as the Nazis approached, rather than evacuate, Batyuk remained in the city, and instead helped organise in the underground communist resistance to the Nazis.First, he worked in a cooperative which produced harnesses for horses used by German troops, and they sabotaged the harnesses, so that after they came into contact with water or snow they would cause a burning sensation and incapacitate the horse. In 1942, he organised a secret anti-fascist printing house, distributing thousands of leaflets. Later he supplied weapons to partisans by stealing them from Nazi warehouses, and helped recruit dozens of new resistance activists. In 1943, along with his sister, he managed to derail a train in North-East Ukraine. In August 1943 his entire group was arrested by the Gestapo and, after days of torture, 26 anti-fascists were executed, including Batyuk.

"Che Guevara's Avenger" was shot dead on this day in 1973. After the assassination of the legendary revolutionary by CIA-backed commandos in the Bolivian jungle in 1967, Monika Ertl embarked on a mission of revenge.
Her relentless pursuit culminated on this day in 1971 when she successfully shot and killed right-wing Bolivian colonel Roberto Periera in Hamburg, Germany. Read on to find out the whole breathtaking story.
