Happy Birthday, Pancho Villa! A legendary leader of the Mexican Revolution who fought against both the old oligarchy and the bourgeois liberal leaders that took power after the initial revolutionary victory. Forced to become a bandit early in life, he organized the peasants in the North in a guerilla struggle to deepen the revolution and fulfil the hopes of the poor.

On this day, 5 June 2013, teenage anti-fascist and unionist Clément Méric was killed by neo-Nazis in Paris. Méric and some of his fellow antifascists happened upon a group of fascists at a sale of Fred Perry and Ben Sherman clothing – popular with both antifascist and fascist skinheads. Despite being physically far smaller than the neo-Nazis, and recovering from leukaemia, 18 year old Méric reportedly mocked them. A brawl then erupted in which Méric was punched in the face five times with brass knuckles before the fascists fled. Méric was a member of the anarcho-syndicalist CNT union, and was active in movements for LGBT+ and migrants' rights. His killers were part of the Third Way fascist group. Two of them were jailed for terms of 11 and seven years imprisonment in 2018 but one was released after 55 days pending an appeal. In the years following his death, thousands of people have gathered to demonstrate in his memory around the anniversary date, and have been addressed by individuals including Assa Traoré, sister of Adama Traoré, a young Black French man who was killed by police in 2016.

When communist artisans associate with one another, theory, propaganda, etc., is their first end. But at the same time, as a result of this association, they acquire a new need — the need for society — and what appears as a means becomes an end. ... the brotherhood of man is no mere phrase with them, but a fact of life, and the nobility of man shines upon us from their work-hardened bodies.

On this day, 6 June 1943, #Greek #communist Pandelis Pouliopoulos (Παντελής Πουλιόπουλος) was executed by the Italian occupation forces in Nezero, near Larissa, along with over a hundred other militants, in retaliation for the destruction by partisans of the Gorgopotamos bridge. Speaking in Italian to the squad of soldiers given the job of executing him, he called on them not to commit such a crime against the #anti-fascist resisters and their adversaries in the war. When the soldiers refused to be executioners, it was the Carabinieri (military police) who were given the task.

On this day, 6 June 1966, #antiracist activist and war veteran James #Meredith began a solitary march of over two hundred miles from Memphis, Tennessee, to Jackson, Mississippi, to protest against racism and to encourage Black voter registration. While doing so, he was shot by a white man in an attempted assassination, but others continued in his place. Meredith himself was even able to rejoin the march while he recovered, and by its arrival in Jackson, alongside him were some fifteen thousand others. In its later stages the march was protected by the Deacons for Defense and Justice, a Black civil rights group who were armed to defend themselves. Previously, Meredith had come to prominence by being the first Black student to attend the all-white University of Mississippi. White supremacists rioted in protest at his admission, burning cars, destroying property and attacking federal agents and US troops with rocks, bricks and gunfire. After the violence subsided, many white students reportedly shunned and harassed him. Meredith now lives in Mississippi, and has written numerous books.

On this day, 7 June 1968, women workers at Ford’s Dagenham plant in England walked out on strike for equal pay with male workers. The women, who sewed car seats, were classified as "unskilled", while men working at the same or similar jobs were classified as "skilled", and so were paid at a higher rate. All 187 women walked out, but even though the thousands of men in the plant remained at work, car production was brought to a complete standstill. Around 200 women at another UK Ford factory walked out in support. Initially, Ford refused to negotiate, while the media try to disparage or ridicule the #women. For example, one newspaper published a photograph of the women with their banner declaring "We want sex equality" partially unfurled so that only "We want sex" was visible. One of the workers, Eileen Pullen, later recounted to the Guardian: "Some of the men said: 'Good for you girl', but others said: 'Get back to work, you're only doing it for pin money'… But our wages weren't for pin money, they were to help with the cost of living, to pay your mortgage and help pay all your bills. It wasn't pocket money. No woman would go out to work just for pocket money, would she? Not if she's got a family".After three weeks, the strikers eventually agreed to return to work for 92% of the men’s wages (up from 85%) in a deal brokered by the government. The strike was the key reason for the Equal Pay Act of 1970, although nominal pay equality at Ford was only achieved after a later strike in 1984.

Dialectics is the teaching which shows how Opposites can be and how they happen to be (how they become) identical,—under what conditions they are identical, becoming transformed into one another,—why the human mind should grasp these opposites not as dead, rigid, but as living, conditional, mobile, becoming transformed into one another.

On this day, 9 June 1987, Yonsei University student, Lee Han-yeol, was hit in the head by a police teargas canister during a demonstration against the US-backed dictatorship in Seoul, South Korea. He was badly injured, and put in a coma by the attack, especially as it showed police were violating their requirement to fire teargas canisters upwards into the air at an angle of at least 45° – instead firing them directly at protesters' heads. The incident spurred public anger about the dictatorship and gave added impetus to the pro-democratic movement. “Bring back Lee Han-yeol!” became a popular slogan shouted in street protests. He eventually died on July 5, soon after president Chun Doo-hwan announced he was caving in and agreeing to introduce direct presidential elections, and other democratic reforms. After Lee’s death was announced, 2000 students fought with riot police near Yonsei University. And 1.1 million people attended his funeral in a mass procession. At the funeral, Lee’s mother, Bae Eun-sim, promised to keep fighting on behalf of her son, declaring:“Let it all go now. Your mother will take care of everything. Han-yeol! Let’s go now to Gwangju!”Gwangju is a South Korean city which was Lee’s home town, and which was at the heart of the movement against the dictatorship, where there was a mass uprising in 1980.Bae remained active in social movements until her death in 2022, at the age of 82.

It is man’s social being that determines his thinking. Once the correct ideas characteristic of the advanced class are grasped by the masses, these ideas turn into a material force which changes society and changes the world.
