On July 28, 1915, the US invaded Haiti, starting a brutal 19-year occupation of the country. Conducted for selfish economic reasons and racist motives, the US waged two brutal wars against the native population, murdering thousands. American corporations were unable to accept Haitian independence while racist elements in US society, including slave owners, had never forgiven Haitians for launching the first successful Black rebellion against slavery. Even when US troops left in 1934, Washington retained influence over Haiti’s finances until 1947. Read on.

🔴 #Science and #Freedom: Toward a New Revolutionary Epistemology
✍🏻 By Sambarta Chatterjee and Purba Chatterjee.

Paul Robeson, speaking of the scientific achievements of the West which have formed the bedrock of its claim to supremacy, posed a question for the 20th century: “having found the key, has Western man—Western bourgeois man—sufficient strength left to turn it in the lock?”1

Today, as we witness the spectacular and terrifying unraveling of the West, this question takes on a new urgency. Western epistemology, rooted in white supremacy and domination, has proved to be woefully inadequate at explaining the rapidly changing world, or answering the great moral and ideological questions of our time. Why is there unbridled poverty and homelessness in the richest nations? Why are Western democracies suffering the biggest crises of legitimacy in their history, with ordinary people utterly distrustful of experts in every field? Why has liberal democracy not made freedom real? What is the way forward for humanity, and for knowledge?

On this day, 29 July 1962, fascist aristocrat Oswald Mosley attempted to march through Manchester. However he was attacked by anti-fascists who knocked him to the ground, and had to be rescued and escorted by 250 police, who were unable to prevent the fascist being pelted with tomatoes, eggs, coins and stones. Following the march Mosley attempted to speak but he was drowned out by a crowd of 5,000 anti-fascists who forced police to call off the meeting after just seven minutes. Clashes between local residents and fascist Blackshirts continued for some time, and the police arrested 47 people. As in most similar cases, the majority of those arrested were anti-fascists.

Once we accept the point of view that human knowledge develops from ignorance, we shall find millions of examples of it just as simple as the discovery of alizarin in coal tar, millions of observations not only in the history of science and technology but in the everyday life of each and every one of us that illustrate the transformation of “things-in-themselves” into “things-for-us.”

In the course of two years Soviet power in one of the most backward countries of Europe did more to emancipate women and to make their status equal to that of the “strong” sex than all the advanced, enlightened, “democratic” republics of the world did in the course of 130 years.

🔴 How Orangeism Paved the Way for British Capital

They built the world as we know it, all the systems you traverse.

Thus sang The Fall’s Mark E. Smith on the Manchester band’s 1988 record, I Am Kurious Oranj, written for a ballet based on the 300th anniversary of William of Orange’s ascension to the English throne. While some of the credits Smith bestowed on King William III warrant closer inspection—having “paved the way for the atom bomb” and “inventing birth control,” for instance—what the revolution of 1688 did pave the way for was the radical transformation of Britain’s socioeconomic order in favor of capitalist accumulation. With William’s rise to power, the country’s emergent bourgeoisie secured the political hegemony needed to bend the apparatus of the state to their collective will, smashing up the existent feudal and familial alliances that characterized the pre-capitalist economy, enabling the mass appropriation of common land by industrial agriculture, and forcing the newly dispossessed peasantry to take up the mantle of wage labor. Often styled the “Glorious” or “Bloodless” Revolution, 1688 enshrined the conditions by which state power became an instrument for subordinating land and labor to the demands of capital.

On this day, 1 August 1834, slavery in the British Caribbean officially ended, and the 800,000 people enslaved by Britons were "freed". The move followed major uprisings of enslaved people, for example in Jamaica and Demerara (now part of Guyana). However, the government compensated the former enslavers, at taxpayers' expense, for the loss of their "property": paying them £20 million at the time. This sum constituted 40% of the total government budget that year, and was the largest ever state bailout until the 2009 bank bailout. The debt incurred was only eventually paid off in 2015. Many rich and powerful people in Britain today can trace their wealth back to this compensation, including former Conservative prime minister David Cameron and his wife.Formerly enslaved people were also forced to work unpaid for 45 hours every week for their former enslavers for four years. Often this is referred to as the date the British Empire abolished slavery, but in fact the institution continued in other colonies and British-controlled areas for many years. For example, in the 1960s, Labour and Conservative governments sent troops to defend the sultan of Oman, where slavery was legal until 1970.

41 years ago today, the pan-African revolutionary Thomas Sankara took power in a popular revolution in Burkina Faso. He implemented some of the most ambitious socialist reforms seen on the continent and opposed Western imperialism. Watch Sankara describe imperialism as a “bad student” who has been sent out of the classroom only to return.

On this day in 1983, Marxist revolutionary and Pan-Africanist Thomas Sankara became president of Burkina Faso, formerly known as Upper Volta, through a popularly supported coup. During his brief but transformative time in power, Sankara initiated sweeping social, ecological, and economic reforms, including significant land redistribution.

His presidency was marked by a strong anti-imperialist stance, challenging Western, particularly French, influence in Africa. Drawing inspiration from earlier Marxist revolutions in the Global South, Sankara believed in the potential of the armed forces to serve as a progressive force.

Sankara’s legacy continues to inspire those who seek radical change and independence from imperialist powers. Read on.
