In this post, I will discuss Raman and IR selection rules in a very simple model that illustrates the essence of this way of thinking. Although this model is cartoonish, it contains the relevant symmetries that cut right to the physics of the problem. Along the way, I hope that a simple picture behind the selection rules arises!

The project is on transient processes and rare events in complex systems, related to evolutionary game theory and heteroclinic dynamics. The focus is on the prediction of transient phenomena such as spatio-temporal pattern formation. Patterns range from temporal sequences of excitations in neural networks to self-organized spatial segregation and the formation
of temporary alliances between species in ecological or social systems, including extinction events, whose risk for occurrence should be analytically estimated. Possible applications refer in particular to cognitive dynamics, with transient heteroclinic processes being coupled and going on in parallel.
Very good programming skills and expertise with analytical calculations are required. Experience in bifurcation analyses and large deviation theory is desirable. 🚗 Braess' paradox in the age of traffic information

The Braess paradox describes the counterintuitive situation that the addition of new roads to road networks can lead to higher travel times for all network users. Recently we could show that user optima leading to the paradox exist in networks of microscopic transport models. We derived phase diagrams for two kinds of route choice strategies that were externally tuned and applied by all network users. Here we address the question whether these user optima are still realized if intelligent route choice decisions are made based upon two kinds of traffic information. We find that the paradox still can occur if the drivers 1) make informed decisions based on their own past experiences or 2) use traffic information similar to that provided by modern navigation apps. This indicates that modern traffic information systems are not able to resolve Braess' paradox.

آیا باید دکتری بخونم؟!

این روزها، همه کسایی که با من لیسانس رو شروع کردند یا دانشگاه رو کاملا ترک کردن یا اینکه جایی در گذار از کارشناسی ارشد به دکتری هستن. تعدادی وارد دوره دکتری شدن و تعدادی هم در فکر ورود به این مقطع شب و روزشون رو سر می‌کنن. نزدیک به یک‌ساله که من دوره دکتریم رو در آلتو شروع کردم. احتمالا هنوز تجربه کافی برای دادن یک جواب خیلی پخته به این سوال رو ندارم، اما به نظرم تجربه‌هایی که این مدت کسب کردم یا چیزهایی که از بقیه شنیدم یا دیدم بتونه ایده‌های شفاف‌تری بده در مورد دکتری خوندن!
