China throws down gauntlet in microchip war with United States

Beijing’s National Bureau of Statistics said Monday the nation produced 359.4 billion integrated circuits in 2021, up 33.3% year on year. The growth comes amid the US-China battle for tech supremacy.

Statistics show last year’s Chinese production marked a significant acceleration from 2020, when its IC output rose 16.2% to 261.3 billion units. In terms of volume, China imported 432.5 billion ICs in 2021, still larger than the country’s output.

According to a Semiconductor Industry Association report, China’s semiconductor industry could account for 17.4% of global sales by 2024, up from 9% in 2020, if its current momentum is maintained. That would make China the world’s No. 3 seller of chips, behind only the US and South Korea.

At least Quarter of Covid deaths are people dying WITH Covid and not “FROM” it — UK data shows

Covid was not the underlying cause of death in 23% of all virus-related fatalities in England last week, the Office for National Statistics found.

Of the 922 deaths registered in England and Wales in the week to January 7, 210 fatalities where Coronavirus was involved found it was a contributing mortality factor but not the main one.

Recent MailOnline analysis suggests daily deaths from Covid in the UK are running at less than half the expected mortality rate in a bad flu year — approximately 200 per day amid the Omicron peak compared to 400 influenza deaths in the flu season of 2017-2018.
