Revealed: Whitty ‘silenced’ Covid ethics advisers

"Prof Sir Chris Whitty attempted to silence government ethics advisers who warned about the impact of Covid policies, The Telegraph can disclose.

The Moral and Ethical Advisory Group (MEAG) was set up to advise Sir Chris, England’s chief medical officer, and senior ministers on the complex policy questions expected to arise during the pandemic.

But the group fell out of favour after it raised concerns about the impact of lockdown on children, the vaccine rollout and Covid passports. At the height of the pandemic, Sir Chris told its co-chairman to stop putting its recommendations in writing.

An investigation by The Telegraph also revealed the existence of a memo that highlighted ethical issues with vaccinating healthy children but was “suppressed”.

MEAG was expected to have a “central role” in government decision-making at the highest level, according to sources familiar with its work at the time. But whistleblowers said it became “marginalised” and “sidelined” by ministers after it highlighted “unwelcome” concerns about Covid policies.

Whistleblowers said the committee was effectively “banned” from discussing the pandemic at a time when “the Department of Health wasn’t doing much else”.

"A new study implicates a pair of substances secreted by immune cells in inducing myocarditis among mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine recipients:

Symptoms — chest pain, shortness of breath, fever and palpitations — appear in the absence of any viral infection. And they happen quickly: within one to three days after a shot. Most of those affected have high blood levels of a substance called cardiac troponin, a well-established clinical indicator of heart-muscle injury. (Cardiac troponin is normally found exclusively in the heart muscle. When found circulating in blood, it indicates damage to heart muscle cells.)

“It’s not a heart attack in the traditional sense,” he said. “There’s no blockage of blood vessels as found in most common heart attacks. When symptoms are mild and the inflammation hasn’t caused structural damage to the heart, we just observe these patients to make sure they recover.”

However, Wu noted, if the inflammation is severe the resulting heart injury can be quite debilitating, leading to hospitalizations; ICU admissions for critically ill patients; and deaths, albeit rarely."

"The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has today, 2 January 2026, approved zapomeran (Kostaive) mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, for the immunisation of individuals aged 18 years of age and older. 
Zapomeran is given as a single 0.5 mL booster dose by injection into the muscle of the upper arm. It contains a self-amplifying messenger RNA (sa-mRNA) which instructs the body’s cells to temporarily make the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. This teaches the immune system to fight off the virus in the future.  
Julian Beach, Interim Executive Director of Healthcare Quality and Access at the MHRA, said:

Patient safety is our top priority. 
The approval of zapomeran (Kostaive) provides an alternative vaccine for use in adults to prevent COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2.  
As with all licensed medicines, we will continue to monitor its safety closely as it becomes more widely used.

Very common side effects (which may affect more than 1 in 10 people) include pain or tenderness at the injection site, tiredness, chills, fever, muscle and joint pain, headache and dizziness. Most side effects are mild and disappear within a few days of vaccination.  
A full list of side effects can be found in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) or the Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPC), which will be published on the MHRA website within 7 days of approval. 
As with any medicine, the MHRA will keep the safety and effectiveness of zapomeran under close review. Anyone who suspects they are having a side effect from this medicine is encouraged to talk to their doctor, pharmacist or nurse and report it directly to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, either through the website (https://yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk) or by searching the Google Play or Apple App stores for MHRA Yellow Card."
