Why is document management crucial to the success of a clinical trial? 🗄

Document management is a common denominator throughout clinical research. Researchers are required to store their trial-related documents in an electronic Trial Master File (eTMF). This is the compulsory collection of documents that enables the reconstruction and inspection of clinical trial operations and their compliance with international quality standards and regulations.

The eTMF can be considered as the backbone of a clinical trial and can easily amount to 1000s of documents. Organizing and managing the eTMF can be difficult and becomes even more challenging when multiple research sites and countries are involved. At the same time, researchers are expected to be inspection-ready at all times.

Niels is a serial entrepreneur with over 18 years of experience in various CTO roles. Next to his role at Triall, Niels is CTO of Sphereon, where he leads the development of an API Platform that includes blockchain and decentralized identity technology. Just recently, Niels was appointed Interim Director of the Factom Protocol blockchain, where he will drive the adoption and impact of the protocol. As one of the former moderators of the largest Dutch tech community (Tweakers.net), Niels has extensive experience in online communities and their dynamics.

Fun fact: Niels, being raised in the south of the Netherlands, can have endless discussions on how the food in his region is superior to the food in other parts of the country. This includes cake, which should really be a Vlaai or Bossche bol! 😉

Mark combines a practical and academic background in health technology innovation. As a PhD candidate he has developed models to leverage ‘hidden’ intangible resources in processes of biomedical innovation. His thinking on a blockchain-enabled model for international cooperation and data-sharing to accelerate R&D response to infectious disease outbreaks was published in Science.

Besides his research, Mark has worked as a consultant, assisting biomedical innovators in mapping the optimal route for growth. Mark is a passionate (self-taught) graphic designer, and has been involved in UI / UX design projects for years.
