Crypto miners wreaking havoc on Kazakhstan’s power grid
An 8% increase in domestic electricity consumption this year due to crypto mining has forced Kazakhstan to turn to Russia to meet growing energy demands. (The Diplomat)
“The 8% increase in consumption is largely due to mining data centers operating in the country. The main suppliers of electricity for mining data centers are coal and gas power plants,” the Deputy Energy Minister said.
Kazakhstan has become the third-largest country in terms of energy consumed to ‘mine’ Bitcoin - due to most local energy being produced by coal-powered stations.
