SONM Progress Report, 2018-2019

At the end of July 2018, SONM launched beta version to test how all the key components work and collect feedback from the first customers. SONM also launched own Ethereum sidechain for internal transactions and smart contract execution.

SONM introduced a Marketplace, that works much like other spot markets: GPU rigs and enterprise servers owners can connect their devices to the platform and get paid by customers for performing useful computations. The Resource Allocation System has a set of components that automatically perform all actions to rent the right amount of instances at the Marketplace and run computations.

SONM developed an operating system distribution designed to help suppliers deploy a SONM worker on their device in a couple of minutes.

The resources hashrate keeps on growing, professional suppliers also join the SONM platform. Today, the distribution of workers covers 41 countries (and continues to grow).

SONM attracted a few companies from the industries that need GPU-related computations and collected feedback (video rendering, CDN, machine learning). Working with these companies SONM got a lot of important insights about their real needs, about the challenges they face when using traditional Cloud, about the features they would like to get from SONM, and what barriers prevent them from adopting SONM services.

So the project released the real working platform and has real plans for its further development together with commercial services based on this platform.
