Safari bug exposes Apple users' browser history and Google account details
A bug in Safari’s IndexedDB implementation on Mac and iOS means a website can see the names of databases for any domain, not just its own. (Independent)
For instance, Google services store an IndexedDB instance for each of your logged in accounts, with the name of the database corresponding to your Google User ID.
Using the exploit described in the blog post, a nefarious site could scrape your Google User ID and then use that ID to find out other personal information about you, as the ID is used to make API requests to Google services

China throws down gauntlet in microchip war with United States
Beijing’s National Bureau of Statistics said Monday the nation produced 359.4 billion integrated circuits in 2021, up 33.3% year on year. The growth comes amid the US-China battle for tech supremacy.
Statistics show last year’s Chinese production marked a significant acceleration from 2020, when its IC output rose 16.2% to 261.3 billion units. In terms of volume, China imported 432.5 billion ICs in 2021, still larger than the country’s output.
According to a Semiconductor Industry Association report, China’s semiconductor industry could account for 17.4% of global sales by 2024, up from 9% in 2020, if its current momentum is maintained. That would make China the world’s No. 3 seller of chips, behind only the US and South Korea.

US govt orders WhatsApp to track unidentified users for unknown reasons
The Meta-owned messaging app was ordered by the DEA to spy on several foreign nationals, even though the agency had no evidence the users had committed a crime or even knew their names, according to an unsealed warrant.
“The warrant reveals the DEA didn’t know the identities of any of the targets, but told WhatsApp to monitor the IP addresses and numbers with which the targeted users were communicating, as well as when and how they were using the app,” a security and privacy reporter found.
The surveillance was reportedly part of an operation investigating the importation of opioids from China.
