Chip off the old Bloc: EU to Spend €43BN to Offset Massive Chip Shortage
The European Union is ready to use €43 billion ($48BN) to remedy a supply chain crisis over computer chips.
“The pandemic has also painfully exposed the vulnerability of its supply chains,” EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said. “We have seen that whole production lines came to a standstill. While the demand was increasing, we could not deliver as needed because of the lack of chips.”
The “chips act“ will pull the bloc's research and production efforts. It now awaits the backing of the EU parliament and states.

Germany Gas Stocks Fall to “Worrying” Levels - Top Energy Firm Warns of Crushing Impact if Russia Pipes Up
An economy ministry spox has claimed Germany’s gas reserves have fallen to “worrying” levels amidst fears that an escalation of the Ukraine crisis would strangle supplies.
The International Energy Agency reportedly believes if Moscow switches off its natural gas to Europe it could have a “seismic impact” - with the knock-on effect potentially backfiring too. (The Guardian)
A fortnight ago, the White House said it would help facilitate a divergence from Europe’s dependence on Russian supplies. But those plans have so far jumped from Qatar to Japan.

Norwegian Parliament Questions Jens Stoltenberg’s Election to Central Bank Chief
The parliament's Control Committee has questioned whether Stoltenberg’s appointment as the new governor of Norges Bank is fair, considering he was previously leader of the Labour Party. (Nettavisen)
The Conservatives believe the key question is whether the recruitment process was tilted in favor of Stoltenberg – arguing the head of the CenBank should be independent and have no partisan bias.
Stoltenberg was PM of Norway and led Labour for a decade before becoming NATO secretary general in 2014 – he is due to step down from the Alliance post in September.
