The Lewis Chessmen, discovered near Uig, on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland; 12th century AD. 🏴
The 79 walrus-ivory chess pieces are among the oldest and most complete chess gaming sets known from Europe. They were produced at a time when the Hebrides Islands of Scotland formed part of the Norse-Gaelic Kingdom of the Isles. The style and themes displayed by the pieces show their Norse origin clearly (i.e. soldiers biting their shields in classic Viking “berserker” style). The various components are now on display at the British Museum in London, and at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.
