In Japan, they used to take a dump in a chamber pot designed as a wooden box with a handle, which was filled with ash or charcoal.

In places where there were rivers, toilets with flushing were used. Structures made of intertwined planks were built on the riverbank or across the flowing stream. A person would simply sit on the planks and defecate into the hole between them, and the river would flush away all waste. So you sit down and feed the fish, the tuna will eat it.
