Correction: By "foreign-sponsored" I had a poor choice of words. AIPAC is NOT foreign. It is sponsored foreign travel.
👍2
Keep in mind this is what they're spending their August recess time on.
Evidently, House ethics rules do permit you to meet with foreign government officials over the course of a sponsored trip.

Again.

I am not against Israel. I hate Hamas. I just don't think politicians should be involved in ANY sponsored trips that involve state business.

🇺🇸✈️💰 Ever wonder who pays for Congressional trips abroad?

This week, a House GOP delegation is heading to Israel. But here's what many don't realize: they aren't paying for their own trips.

There's a charity tied to AIPAC called the American Israel Education Foundation Inc, and according to its own IRS 990 forms, its top priority is funding Congressional trips to Israel.

It brings in $70 million a year.
(EIN: 52-1623781)

I'm not anti-Israel, but I am being skeptical of any foreign-sponsored travel for U.S. officials. Should outside groups be paying for our lawmakers’ overseas trips? Especially if these groups are operating in another country's interests?

🚨What if House seats were based on citizens, not residents?

Using 2023 Census data and the Huntington–Hill method, here's how congressional representation would shift if we counted only U.S. citizens 🇺🇸 (not all residents):

📈 Gains:
Arizona : +1
Idaho: +1
Michigan: +1
Ohio : +1
Tennessee: +1
Utah : +1

📉 Losses:
California: -4
Illinois: -1
New York: -1

My take for the Trump administration: If you're aiming to represent voters, it makes more sense to count citizens only, not just exclude undocumented immigrants (which would still count legal non-citizens who also can't vote).

Muslim Brotherhood isn't merely affiliated with Hamas, Hamas is the Muslim Brotherhood.

The 1988 Hamas charter openly declares it a "wing" of the Brotherhood.

The only reason the Muslim Brotherhood is not designated a foreign terrorist organization is political correctness.

Also, on political topics, it automatically assumed I was wanting a left perspective. More so than 4o.

But it had no problem "emulating" a conservative voice either when asked. Less problem than 4o.

It explicitly tries to get rid of sycophantic bias and does a good job at that.

Overall, 5 is good, but also a bigger pain in the butt to prompt.
Not sure who cares, but I spent a decent chunk of today running ChatGPT 5 through its paces.

Takeaways:

1. Had a lot of timeouts / glitches.

2. Context handling feels intentional. In long threads, it often skipped over "middle" context in favor of speed. But when I explicitly reminded it of those details, it switched gears and dug in with deeper reasoning.

3. Big jump from GPT-4o, but only if you prompt well. Performance gains are obvious, but also far more sensitive to sloppy prompting. Lazy prompts get lazy answers.

4. The arms race is real. Grok 4.0 is excellent, but GPT 5's Deep Research mode, when paired with careful prompt engineering, has been the strongest LLM performance I've seen so far.

5. Pricing is a little confusing on gpt-5-mini. $0.25 for 1MM tokens in input is amazing. But $2.00 on output is quite pricey.
I'm not a Democrat, but here's how I'd explain it.

It comes down to fundamentally different views on what "peace" means.

Realism / Westphalian ideology defines peace as absence of wars.

Internationalism / post-Westphalian defines peace as how many countries adopt liberal norms. This ideology was supported by Enlightenment thinkers but only started dominating in the 20th century and had claimed a monopoly on policymakers by late 1970s.

In short, by "democracy" they mean a borderless, supranational global democracy that is the end state of internationalism. Because nation-states are not a thing anymore in this vision, this means "democracy" is ran by technocrats and NGOs.

The values of self-sufficiency or America First or reduced foreign aid or reduced influence of NGOs - is directly against this concept of "democracy." That's why they consider Trump an existential threat, because they honestly believe he is - remember, "peace" to them means interventionism. Trump is making war in that sense.
