Many critics have correctly noticed I've worked closely with the Chinese.

I've been an atheist most of my adult life. But for the most part I've been sympathetic with the right wing. And at a point in time, that brought me close to the "China is awesome" wing.

What's the point of this story?

Fast foward to 2020: my husband and I were constrained from the government in everything, in the COVID-19 era.

We had young, restless children.

We went to the local playground, which was closed down.

What did we do?

We tore off the tape. That's all we did.

In China, we would have been shot on the spot. That is the price of trading safety for freedom.

We need more of those conventions. We need more of those debates. They aren’t civil wars. They are growing pains in learning how to coordinate at scale, in allowing individuals to have a voice.

By and far the biggest weakness of conservatives is that we’ve been content to let institutions act as coordinating nodes. Now that it’s becoming increasingly clear that institutions simply aren’t functioning, we have to replace that role ourselves.

NGOs coordinate and synchronize their own messaging through lavish million-dollar-plus conventions which happen constantly. And I think it’s a great thing that we’re finally starting to develop these conventions, as messy as they are.

The difference between the right and the left is this: when the right encounters a story about HIV transmission in Congo resulting from rape, it asks why Congo has failed to eliminate the rapists.

The left, by contrast, sees an opportunity to take a cheap shot at Trump for not funding Congo’s healthcare with American money. That funding could easily exist already, by redirecting the hundreds of millions of dollars currently funneled into NGOs that groom a judiciary which repeatedly releases rapists back onto the streets.

Your side perpetuates this cycle. What you resent is not the suffering, but the loss of access to our taxpayer dollars. We no longer respond to your appeals to pathos.
