NEW – Great Britain is set to publish a new strategic defence review today that will be its toughest in decades and will identify Russia as an “immediate and pressing threat” to national security and the West. The 130-page document has been prepared by a team of advisers to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, including former NATO Secretary General George Robertson.

🔴 Key review details:
▪️ Russia has been described as the most serious military and strategic challenge facing the UK and Europe since the Cold War. The review stresses that Russia's aggression against Ukraine and the build-up of its military presence on the EU's borders pose a risk of widening the conflict and require an immediate response.
▪️ China is defined not as an enemy but as a “sophisticated and persistent challenge” that sometimes cooperates with Moscow. Iran and North Korea are labeled as regional destabilizers.
▪️ The document notes that modern threats include not only tanks and missiles, but also cyberattacks, sabotage, drone attacks and AI, which can disrupt critical infrastructure and disable communications.
▪️ Among the structural measures is the creation of a new Cyber and Electromagnetic Command, which will be headed by General James Hockenhull.
▪️ For the first time since the 1940s, a new volunteer "Home Guard" is planned to protect key infrastructure - power plants, airports, transport hubs - from drone attacks and sabotage.
▪️ The size of the British Army has reached a historic low (70,860 personnel), so an increase of 5,000 troops and an expansion of reserve formations are being discussed.
▪️ A commitment to increasing defence spending has been formally confirmed: 2.5% of GDP by 2027, with an ambition to reach 3% in the next parliamentary term. This is expected to boost the defence budget by more than £50bn and will form the basis for new commitments at the NATO summit in June.

⚔️🇪🇺"Baltic Sentinel": NATO Wants to Replace Ships with Drones

NATO is preparing to end Operation Baltic Sentinel, which patrols the Baltic Sea and protects underwater infrastructure, says NATO Assistant Secretary General for Innovation, Hybrid and Cyber Technologies Jean-Charles Ellerman-Kingombe.

He added that in June the alliance will deploy a fleet of 60-80 naval drones in the Baltic Sea.

The alliance intends to test whether it is possible to monitor the waters using maritime drones and satellites to replace deployed warships, as the Baltic Sentinel mission is expensive and resource-intensive.

"Deploying a mission in the Baltic Sea is not free. There are a lot of frigates, personnel, resources provided by allies. As long as these resources are in the Baltic Sea, they cannot be elsewhere," Ellerman-Kingombe explained.

NATO countries plan to account for military aid to Ukraine as defense spending, Euractiv reports, citing sources.

This scheme will allow reporting on the growth of spending to 5% of GDP, which Trump has long been demanding, but it is specified that non-military aid and the allocation of weapons from existing stockpiles will not be taken into account.
