The Israeli Ministry of Defense and IAI successfully launch the OFEK 19 satellite, entering orbit in space 🛰️📡
The Space Program Office of the Defense Research and Development Directorate (DDR&D) (MAFAT) at the Israeli Ministry of Defense (IMOD), the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and IAI - Israel Aerospace Industries successfully launched the OFEK 19 satellite into space last night (Tuesday, September 2, 2025) at 10:30 p.m. IST. The launch was carried out from an undisclosed test site using a three-stage "Shavit" launcher.
In accordance with the original launch plan, the satellite entered orbit, began transmission, and underwent a series of initial tests.
Engineers from the DDR&D Space Program Office, in collaboration with engineers from the IAI Space Division, continue to conduct pre-planned tests until the satellite is fully operational in the near future.
The Ofek 19 satellite was developed based on the experience accumulated by the defense establishment and IAI in the development of the Ofek advanced observation satellites, which have been launched into space since 1988.
The defense space program is led by the DDR&D Space Program Office and includes various stakeholders within the IDF, such as the Intelligence Directorate's Unit 9900 and the Israeli Air Force (IAF). IAI developed and manufactured satellites and launchers as the prime contractor.
IAI's Systems, Missiles, and Space (SMS) Group, through its SPACE Division, led the project in collaboration with ELTA Group, which produced the payload, and IAI's MLM Division, which developed the launcher alongside state-owned Tomer A LTD and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, which manufactured the launch vehicle's rocket motors.
Upon operational implementation, the IMOD will transfer command of the satellite to Unit 9900, the IDF's visual and geospatial intelligence unit.
