Well, when the civilization was in power, the desert was a tropical paradise with massive lakes and rivers.

There is also an ancient map, that was created by Herodotus, that shows the Nile running west to east through the middle of the Sahara.

Herodotus (484 BC – 425 BC) is widely considered to have been the first writer to have treated historical subjects using a method of systematic investigation.

He is also known as, “The Father of History”.

The ancient lake and river system of the Sahara was enormous and included the largest lake (Mega Chad) and the longest river (Nile).

Mega Chad was bigger than all the Great Lakes combined.

Within this region, there are art depictions of elephants, giraffes, African animals all over the Sahara meaning the climate was completely different in the past.

So if the Sahara was tropical, then where was Atlantis located?

In Plato’s Critias and Timaeus, Plato said, “The main city of Atlantis consists of concentric circles of water and land.”

The ‘Eye of the Sahara’ is 24km across and 48 km across to the outer mountains. It wasn’t discovered until 1965 on the Gemini 4 mission from space.

Plato used a measurement called Stadia, where 1 = 607ft. He said the Diameter of Atlantis was 127 Stadia so 127 * 607ft. = 77,089 ft. = 23.5 km.
