Japan Court Upholds Ban On Same-Sex Marriage

A Tokyo court ruled the country’s ban on same-sex marriages was constitutional, but that insufficient legal protections for same-sex families violated their human rights.

While the case carries no obligation for Fumio Kishida’s government to enforce legal changes, there are two more cases pending in other areas of the country which activists and lawyers believe may eventually pressure constitutional change.

A previous similar case in Sapporo last year ruled the ban was unconstitutional, while an Osaka ruling in June found the opposite. (RT)
