So amazed by this life of Luminous Education / self-directed learning.
Every day a new surprise.
Every day a new delight.
Our 8yo Luminous Kid is turning 9 this weekend.
🎉🎂🥳
8 is his favorite number.
In celebration of the last days of being 8, he decided to blast through 8th grade math while still being 8 yrs old.
This whole Math thing started two years and two weeks ago, when he was 6 about to turn 7.
He said: "Mama, I think I'm pretty good at math". He knew this because he was great at tallying up our fruits & veggies purchases at the Farmer's Market.
So we tried hopping on Khan Academy and discovered that the all-natural uncaged unschool life of a 6-year-old, already naturally covers all concepts in 1st & 2nd Grade Math according to their "common core" standards.
It happens naturally through lemonade stands, kidpreneur projects, cooking, baking, farmer's market, household fixer-upper tasks.
In 2 weeks, he joyfully blasted through 1st & 2nd grade math as if playing a video game.
For me as a first-time mama of a Luminous Unschooly Self-directed Kid, that was a profound moment.
This was the moment I relaxed into the trust that subjects like Math, Reading, Writing etc can be picked up naturally, almost osmotically - through living life.
After turning 7yo, he decided to intermittently play with 3rd grade math. About 1x-2x/week, he'd hopped on Khan Academy for 30mins here or there as if a video game. So it was, he played his way through 3rd & 4th Grade math.
Then somehow, the last month before his 7th bday, he suddenly picked up the pace and complete all of 5th Grade in 1 month, just before his birthday.
I was blown away.
The most interesting part is - whenever the problem was tricky, he would lay in bed, roll around, or jump up and down, or hang his head upside-down.
Or he'd look at the page at different angles, backwards or upside down.
Often he'd roll his eyes up to the sky and "grab the answer from space." 🙄😇🤩
He discovered that 6-7pm was his favorite time for math.
Without the limitations of "school" he's completely free to jump up and down, roll around, or hang upside-down all he wants. No being imprisoned into a little tiny desk. 🤸🏄♂️🙄😇🤩🕺🤾♂️🛌
Then 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade math gradually became more challenging, especially those darn word problems!
Somehow, magically and joyfully, he completed 8th grade math today. I can hardly believe my own eyes.
Well, to be exact 99% score is not quite 100%. But luckily, I'm not a helicopter tiger mom. 🚁🐯🤰. So I think we can let that 1% pass!
