Six Characteristics of a Cult (an article written in 2011). i found this very interesting and enlightening. hope it helps you gain greater clarity as well.

1 - Authoritarian Leadership
acceptance of an authority figure who exercises excessive control on cult members

2 - Exclusivism
belief that it alone has the truth, the only means to salvation.

3 - Isolationism
segregation/breaking off association with those not in the cult.

4 - Opposition to Independent Thinking
The “thinking,” as it were, has already been done for them by the cult leadership; the proper response is merely to submit.

5 - Fear of Being “Disfellowshipped”
remain faithful or get dis-fellowshipped / dis-barred from the cult.

6 - Threats of Satanic Attack
use of fear and intimidation to keep members in line.
