The purpose of this study is to extend a feature set with non-linear features to improve classification rate of guilty
and innocent subjects. Non-linear features can provide extra information about phase space. The Event-Related
Potential (ERP) signals were recorded from 49 subjects who participated in concealed face recognition test. For
feature extraction, at first, several morphological characteristics, frequency bands, and wavelet coefficients (we
call them basic-features) are extracted from each single-trial ERP. Recurrence Quantification Analysis (RQA)
measures are then computed as non-linear features from each single-trial. We apply Genetic Algorithm (GA)
to select the best feature set and this feature set is used for classification of data using Linear Discriminant Anal-
ysis (LDA) classifier. Next, we use a new approach to improve classification results based on introducing an adap-
tive-threshold. Results indicate that our method is able to correctly detect 91.83% of subjects (45 correct
detection of 49 subjects) using combination of basic and non-linear features, that is higher than 87.75% for
basic and 79.59% for non-linear features. This shows that combination of non-linear and basic- features could im-
prove classification rate

Movement, cognition and perception arise from the collective activity of neurons within cortical circuits and across large-scale
systems of the brain. While the causes of single neuron spikes have been understood for decades, the processes that support
collective neural behavior in large-scale cortical systems are less clear and have been at times the subject of contention.
Modeling large-scale brain activity with nonlinear dynamical systems theory allows the integration of experimental data from
multiple modalities into a common framework that facilitates prediction, testing and possible refutation. This work reviews the
core assumptions that underlie this computational approach, the methodological framework that fosters the translation of theory
into the laboratory, and the emerging body of supporting evidence. While substantial challenges remain, evidence supports the
view that collective, nonlinear dynamics are central to adaptive cortical activity. Likewise, aberrant dynamic processes appear to
underlie a number of brain disorders.

Despite its great promise, neuroimaging has yet to substantially impact clinical practice and public health. However,
a developing synergy between emerging analysis techniques and data-sharing initiatives has the potential to transform the role
of neuroimaging in clinical applications. We review the state of translational neuroimaging and outline an approach to developing
brain signatures that can be shared, tested in multiple contexts and applied in clinical settings. The approach rests on three
pillars: (i) the use of multivariate pattern-recognition techniques to develop brain signatures for clinical outcomes and
relevant mental processes; (ii) assessment and optimization of their diagnostic value; and (iii) a program of broad exploration
followed by increasingly rigorous assessment of generalizability across samples, research contexts and populations. Increasingly
sophisticated models based on these principles will help to overcome some of the obstacles on the road from basic neuroscience
to better health and will ultimately serve both basic and applied goals.

POSTDOCTORAL POSITION AVAILABLE IN PRODROME/EARLY PSYCHOSIS: NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY’S ADAPT PROGRAM

The Northwestern University Adolescent Development and Preventive Treatment (ADAPT) program is seeking applications for a full-time postdoctoral fellow.  We are looking for someone with background in cognitive/affective neuroscience or clinical psychology, with interests and experience in electrophysiological assessment and/or neuroimaging.    Currently we are running a number of NIMH/Foundation/University funded multimodal protocols (structural/diffusion-tensor/ functional imaging, ERP, brain stimulation, eye tracking, instrumental motor assessment) with prodromal syndrome and early psychosis populations focusing on: brain, immune, and endocrine changes in response to aerobic exercise; neurobiology of motor dysfunction; timing of affective processing dysfunction (in new collaboration with Tim Curran).  Please see our website for more details:http://www.adaptprogram.com.  The ideal candidate will be a person who is interested in applying a cognitive/affective neuroscience background (e.g., Cognition /Cog-Neuro or related Ph.D.) to investigate early psychosis and the psychosis prodrome.  Clinical Psychology Ph.D.’s with related interests and training experiences are also highly encouraged to apply.   Preference will be given to candidates with a proven track record of good productivity, as well as strong computer programming skills (e.g., MATLAB/Python).  We also strongly encourage diversity, and will give preference to applicants from populations underrepresented in STEM.

The successful applicant will join Vijay Mittal and an active research team and will be responsible for designing/running experiments, analyzing and processing data, and disseminating findings.  In addition, the applicant will work on collaborative studies with Vijay Mittal and Robin Nusslock, examining shared and distinct pathophysiology, underlying reward-processing abnormalities in psychosis and affective disorders.  There will also be ample opportunities to take courses (Northwestern has a number of in-depth advanced training opportunities, covering a range of methodological and quantitative methods), collaborate (benefit from a number of active ADAPT collaborations as well as the vibrant Northwestern research community), help to mentor/train graduate students, and develop and follow Independent research questions.  Significant attention will be placed on career development (e.g., regular conference attendance/participation, training in grant writing, mentorship, teaching, presentations/job-talks etc.) – this is ideal position for someone interested in preparing for a tenure track position.

For questions or to submit and application, please contact Vijay Mittal (vijay.mittal@northwestern.edu ).  Applicants should send a C.V., brief letter describing interests and prior experience, and two publications (that best reflect contributions of the candidate).  Salary is based on the NIMH Post-doctoral scale, and funding is available for up to two-years (appointments are for one year, but renewable for two years, based on progress/merit).  There is a flexible start date (Spring, Summer or Fall 2017), and review of applications will begin March 1st
