From June 14-26th, the English-Speaking Nation: Secondary Teacher Training Program (ESN:STT) launched the in-person TESOL Core Certificate Program (TCCP) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan for 93 Core Trainers.

The Deputy Chief of Mission, Mr. Alan Meltzer, and the Minister of Public Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Mr. Sherzod Shermatov, took part in the opening ceremony of June TCCP. Initially planned as a full in-person course, the first 60-hour Foundation Course was hosted virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions and public health regulations. The in-person June TCCP course is the second 60 hours of the training course.

On June 26th the TCCP in Tashkent was officially over and, currently, four TESOL instructors, in partnership with the ESN U.S. Coaches, are delivering seven TCCP courses in different regions of Uzbekistan throughout July and August to over 230 teachers. Between June 30th and July 26th, the English-Speaking Nation: Secondary Teacher Training Program (ESN: STT) conducted six concurrent TESOL Core Certificate Program (TCCP) courses in the following regions of Uzbekistan: Namangan, Fergana, Samarkand, Bukhara, Nukus, and Tashkent.

Together with the U.S. Coach Mina Gavell, TESOL instructor Matthew Schaefer delivered TCCP training in Nukus to 23 Regional Peer Members from various regions of Karakalpakstan and Khorezm.

The TCCP trainings were coordinated by American Councils for International Education and delivered by TESOL International Association (TESOL).

The second TCCP training was conducted in Samarkand from June 30th till July 26th where the U.S. Coach Kendra Staley and TESOL instructor Nancy Ackles delivered sessions to 28 Regional Peer Members from various regions of Samarkand, Kashkadarya, and Surkhandarya.

Dr. Ackles shared her impression about delivering the TCCP sessions: "The Samarkand participants have been a pleasure to work with because they have been energetic and creative as we’ve worked through the modules of these two courses. It is not easy to study, communicate, and create in a second language for long days in a very intensive program."

ESN: STT offers an integrated professional development opportunity for English language teacher trainers and secondary school English language teachers in Uzbekistan. ESN: STT is funded by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Uzbekistan and implemented by American Councils for International Education in close cooperation with the Ministry of Public Education in Uzbekistan.

Bukhara is the third region out of six where TESOL Core Certificate Program (TCCP) was coordinated by the English Speaking Nation: Secondary Teacher Training Program (ESN: STT) program of American Councils for International Education and delivered by TESOL International Association (TESOL).

Between June 30 and July 26, two ESN U.S. Coaches – Briana Rogers and Alicia Bradley, delivered sessions to 27 Regional Peer Members (RPMs). These RPMs who are Secondary School Teachers of English arrived from various regions of Bukhara and Navoi. One of RPMs Yarasheva Nigora from Bukhara, who works at School #3, shared her impression about the sessions: “This course has changed my teaching style. I have learned so much from our Coaches Briana and Alicia. I admire their modeling while presenting modules because efficient classroom management is one of the crucial aspects of teaching."

25 English Language Teaching Experts arrives to Uzbekistan as Part of the English-Speaking Nation (ESN) Program

Tashkent, Uzbekistan, August 2, 2021 – Advisor to the Minister for International Donors & Projects at the Minister of Public Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan Ulugbek Kasimkhodjaev and U.S. Embassy Tashkent Cultural Affairs Officer Joanne Kramb welcomed 25 American English Teacher Experts to Uzbekistan as part of the English-Speaking Nation: English Summer Excellence Training (ESN: ESET). These 25 English Teacher Experts will join seven locally embedded American Teacher Coaches in conducting a 108-hour English language training for over 420 Uzbekistan secondary school English teachers. The objective of the 18-day training is to help Uzbekistani English teachers refine their English speaking, writing, listening, and presentation skills.

The fourth TCCP training was conducted in Namangan from June 30th till July 26th where TESOL instructor Bita Bookman and ESN Core Trainer Yana Kuchkarova delivered sessions to 30 Regional Peer Members from various regions of Namangan and Andijan.

Bita shared her impression about conducting the sessions in Namangan: “It was such a pleasure working with Namangan RPMs in the Foundations and Adolescent courses. The group worked long hours and did an extraordinary job throughout the two courses. I was so impressed with the participants’ commitment, hard work, and insights."

English Speaking Nation is a program of the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Uzbekistan and implemented by American Councils for International Education in close cooperation with the Ministry of Public Education in Uzbekistan.

Between June 30th and July 26th, TESOL Instructor Lisa Mann together with the ESN U.S. Coaches Kenneth Myers and later with Wendy Coulson delivered TCCP sessions in Tashkent to 28 Regional Peer Members (RPMs) from Syrdarya, Djizzakh, Tashkent region, and Tashkent city.

One of the RPMs, Meyrbek Oralbaev, who teaches English at school #1 in Gazalkent, stated: “After completing the Foundation and Adolescent parts of the TCCP course, I can say for sure that I have improved my learning and teaching skills. I was pleased to be a part of this course and acquired knowledge from some of the most experienced and high skilled Coaches like Lisa Mann, Kenneth Myers, and Wendy Coulson. The sessions were perfectly organized. The confidence level of my professional growth has been increased significantly”.

Between June 30th and July 26th, the ESN: STT program conducted the TESOL Core Certificate Program (TCCP) for selected RPMs in six regions of Uzbekistan: Namangan, Fergana, Samarkand, Bukhara, Nukus, and Tashkent.

The TCCP training events are coordinated by American Councils for International Education and delivered by TESOL International Association (TESOL) and ESN Coaches.

Following the July TCCP Program, more RPMs are expected to take the certification program throughout August and fall of 2021. Within the scope of the ESN: STT, 307 RPMs are expected to go through the TESOL certification program. Read more: here.
Between August 1st and 22nd, the English Speaking Nation: Summer Excellence Training (ESN: ESET) program is conducting concurrent trainings to 420 secondary school teachers of English at local public schools and in-service requalification centers in seven geographically diverse regions of Uzbekistan: Samarkand, Andijan, Namangan, Termez, Bukhara, Qarshi, and Urgench.

Sixty secondary school teachers of English from Samarkand are now attending 108-hour English language training. They have an opportunity to increase their proficiency, specifically in speaking and listening skills, reflective practice, public presentation, and peer review. Some of the most experienced English Teacher Experts - Kendra Staley, Mary Enright, Robert Dunn, Ellen Barrett, and Phil Owen, are delivering the training in Samarkand which curriculum has five areas of focus such as General English, Classroom English, Professional Development, Conversation Time, and Microteaching.

The 25 English Teacher Experts conducted seven concurrent 108-hour English language trainings under the program ESN:ESET in Andijan, Namangan, Samarkand, Termez, Qarshi, Bukhara, and Urgench from August 1 – 22 at local public schools and in-service requalification centers.

Some of the most experienced English Teacher Trainers – Wendy Coulson, Edward Baluyut, Emily Rodriguez, Jared Rodriguez, Tim Thomson, Jorge Catalan, Loren Lee Chiesi delivered the training in Namangan to 75 secondary school teachers of English. They had an opportunity to increase their proficiency, specifically in speaking and listening skills, reflective practice, public presentation, and peer review.

ESN: ESET is a component of the English Speaking Nation program, a nationwide initiative to strengthen Uzbekistan’s English teachers’ classroom English language competency and English teaching skills. Read more here
Some of the most experienced English Teacher Experts – Jesse Conway, Heather Gaddis, Ralph Schusler, Colleen Loboy, Shannon Smith, Juli Sarris conducted the training to 75 school teachers of English in Andijan under the The English Speaking Nation: Summer Excellence Training (ESN: ESET) program from August 1 – 22. The purpose of this program is to provide secondary school teachers of English with minimal language skills and opportunity to increase their proficiency, specifically in speaking and listening skills, reflective practice, public presentation, and peer review.

Tuxtamurotova Oqgul, who works at the school #43 in Bulokboshi district of Andijan region, shares her impression: “We would like to thank all the trainers who participated in this project and helped us wholeheartedly. We have learned many great techniques from them that will be useful in the teaching process. ESN summer program gave us a great opportunity for the development of our teaching activities.” Read more here
Between August 1st and 22nd, seventy-five school teachers of English from Kashkadarya region participated in 108-hour English language training under the program ESN:ESET. They had an opportunity to increase their proficiency, specifically in speaking and listening skills, reflective practice, public presentation, and peer review.

One of the trainers Matt McGinnis, who earned his M.A. in TESOL from Teachers College of Columbia University, shared his impression about the training: “I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching the participants over the past few weeks. Their enthusiasm is unmatched, and their willingness to learn produces a very positive, productive learning environment. I am confident this training will bolster their teaching, as our curriculum has added an abundance of tools to their respective toolkits". Read more here

Another the ESN:ESET training occurred in Bukhara from August 1 – 22 at local public schools and in-service requalification centers where some of the most experienced English Teacher Experts – Alicia Bradley, Tim Hudenburg, Kitty Johnson, Lisa Wakefield, Yuta Otake worked on provision of minimal language skills and opportunity to increase the proficiency of 60 school teachers of English from Bukhara region. The training was designed to offer teachers practice in the basics of English vocabulary, grammar, speaking, listening, reading, writing, teaching common conversational patterns, practicing spoken English phrases, as well as microteaching demonstrations.

It is essential to highlight that Kitty Johnson taught English and methodology at Bukhara State University more than twenty years ago. She stated: “It’s wonderful to be back in Uzbekistan and especially to see that some of my old students are now teachers who are participating in the ESN program here in Bukhara." Read more here
