Between June 30th and July 26th, the ESN: STT program conducted the TESOL Core Certificate Program (TCCP) for selected RPMs in six regions of Uzbekistan: Namangan, Fergana, Samarkand, Bukhara, Nukus, and Tashkent.

The TCCP training events are coordinated by American Councils for International Education and delivered by TESOL International Association (TESOL) and ESN Coaches.

Following the July TCCP Program, more RPMs are expected to take the certification program throughout August and fall of 2021. Within the scope of the ESN: STT, 307 RPMs are expected to go through the TESOL certification program. Read more: here.
Between August 1st and 22nd, the English Speaking Nation: Summer Excellence Training (ESN: ESET) program is conducting concurrent trainings to 420 secondary school teachers of English at local public schools and in-service requalification centers in seven geographically diverse regions of Uzbekistan: Samarkand, Andijan, Namangan, Termez, Bukhara, Qarshi, and Urgench.

Sixty secondary school teachers of English from Samarkand are now attending 108-hour English language training. They have an opportunity to increase their proficiency, specifically in speaking and listening skills, reflective practice, public presentation, and peer review. Some of the most experienced English Teacher Experts - Kendra Staley, Mary Enright, Robert Dunn, Ellen Barrett, and Phil Owen, are delivering the training in Samarkand which curriculum has five areas of focus such as General English, Classroom English, Professional Development, Conversation Time, and Microteaching.

The 25 English Teacher Experts conducted seven concurrent 108-hour English language trainings under the program ESN:ESET in Andijan, Namangan, Samarkand, Termez, Qarshi, Bukhara, and Urgench from August 1 – 22 at local public schools and in-service requalification centers.

Some of the most experienced English Teacher Trainers – Wendy Coulson, Edward Baluyut, Emily Rodriguez, Jared Rodriguez, Tim Thomson, Jorge Catalan, Loren Lee Chiesi delivered the training in Namangan to 75 secondary school teachers of English. They had an opportunity to increase their proficiency, specifically in speaking and listening skills, reflective practice, public presentation, and peer review.

ESN: ESET is a component of the English Speaking Nation program, a nationwide initiative to strengthen Uzbekistan’s English teachers’ classroom English language competency and English teaching skills. Read more here
Some of the most experienced English Teacher Experts – Jesse Conway, Heather Gaddis, Ralph Schusler, Colleen Loboy, Shannon Smith, Juli Sarris conducted the training to 75 school teachers of English in Andijan under the The English Speaking Nation: Summer Excellence Training (ESN: ESET) program from August 1 – 22. The purpose of this program is to provide secondary school teachers of English with minimal language skills and opportunity to increase their proficiency, specifically in speaking and listening skills, reflective practice, public presentation, and peer review.

Tuxtamurotova Oqgul, who works at the school #43 in Bulokboshi district of Andijan region, shares her impression: “We would like to thank all the trainers who participated in this project and helped us wholeheartedly. We have learned many great techniques from them that will be useful in the teaching process. ESN summer program gave us a great opportunity for the development of our teaching activities.” Read more here
Between August 1st and 22nd, seventy-five school teachers of English from Kashkadarya region participated in 108-hour English language training under the program ESN:ESET. They had an opportunity to increase their proficiency, specifically in speaking and listening skills, reflective practice, public presentation, and peer review.

One of the trainers Matt McGinnis, who earned his M.A. in TESOL from Teachers College of Columbia University, shared his impression about the training: “I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching the participants over the past few weeks. Their enthusiasm is unmatched, and their willingness to learn produces a very positive, productive learning environment. I am confident this training will bolster their teaching, as our curriculum has added an abundance of tools to their respective toolkits". Read more here

Another the ESN:ESET training occurred in Bukhara from August 1 – 22 at local public schools and in-service requalification centers where some of the most experienced English Teacher Experts – Alicia Bradley, Tim Hudenburg, Kitty Johnson, Lisa Wakefield, Yuta Otake worked on provision of minimal language skills and opportunity to increase the proficiency of 60 school teachers of English from Bukhara region. The training was designed to offer teachers practice in the basics of English vocabulary, grammar, speaking, listening, reading, writing, teaching common conversational patterns, practicing spoken English phrases, as well as microteaching demonstrations.

It is essential to highlight that Kitty Johnson taught English and methodology at Bukhara State University more than twenty years ago. She stated: “It’s wonderful to be back in Uzbekistan and especially to see that some of my old students are now teachers who are participating in the ESN program here in Bukhara." Read more here
Forty-five school teachers of English from Surkhandarya attended 108-hour the English Speaking Nation: Summer Excellence Training from August 1 – 22 at local public schools and in-service requalification centers. The training focused on building confidence in using general English in everyday activities and communication with students.

Christopher Cowan, who was not only an English Teacher Expert for the ESET program but also is a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Uzbekistan, highlighted: “As a teacher, the ESET program was a wonderful experience. I enjoyed working with local teachers. It was clear that participating in the training assisted them with their skills in their professional techniques, and their confidence. I hope that the participants in this program go on to share what they learned with their other local colleagues, and I hope to see the program continue next summer!” Read more here

📆Tashkent, September 20, 2021:
American Councils is partnering with George Mason University and the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages International Association (TESOL) in order to facilitate two one-week Training-of-Trainers (TOT) Programs for selected ESN Core Trainers and Regional Peer Mentors. More than two hundred participants: CTs and most qualified RPM teachers have been selected to take part in the TOT training.

During the training, participants will learn about the 6 Principles for Exemplary Teaching of English Learners, integrate the lessons learnt from the Teaching English Through English (TETE) course, engage in group workshop planning, and learn how to plan the trainings for the cascading process within the ESN: STT Program. Two one-week TOT trainings will be delivered by 7 TESOL instructors and 4 GMU Instructors together with seven American Coaches from the ESN: Coaches Program in Tashkent.

On Saturday October 2, 2021 American Councils finished conducting two one-week Training-of-Trainers (TOT) Programs in partnership with the George Mason University and the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages International Association (TESOL).

Closing ceremony was held at Daniel Hill Hotel in Tashkent with the press conference and the coffee break that provided the networking opportunity for participants.
American Councils Country Director William O'Roark, Cultural Affairs Officer of the U.S. Embassy in Tashkent Sarah Talalay, Advisor to the Minister for International Donors & Grants, Ministry of Public Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan Ulugbek Kasimkhodjaev have taken part in the ceremony.
