The New Found Advertising Strategy in Ethiopia: A Cautionary Tale for Job Seekers and Portal Owners
Recently, I’ve noticed a disturbing trend in the Ethiopian job market. Some companies are playing with their reputations and, more alarmingly, with the hopes of job seekers. These companies post non-existent job vacancies, which then get widely circulated by job portals(Free Advertisements). After receiving thousands of applications, they simply disappear.
To test this issue, I created a fake job vacancy using a non-existent company name. Shockingly, numerous telegram channels with hundreds of thousands of subscribers shared the post without verifying the company’s existence.
👉Job posting portal owners, please take note:✍️
👉Don't just post everything from anywhere. Verify the authenticity of the job postings.
🤔Some companies are using your job portals as a new way to advertise themselves, exploiting both your platform and the job seekers.
Today, I was called for an interview at a company (whose name I will withhold for now). They scheduled my interview for 4LT. I arrived on time, and when I inquired about the interview, the call operator said she would check. After some time, she stopped picking up my calls.
This experience raises several concerns:
👉Job Seekers: Always verify the legitimacy of job postings. A bit of research can save you time and prevent disappointment.
👉Companies: Your brand’s reputation is crucial. Misleading job seekers for advertising purposes is unethical and can have long-term negative impacts.
👉Job Portals: Implement strict verification processes to ensure the authenticity of job postings. Protect your platform and its users from being exploited.
