49 years ago, the Pride of the American Side, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank.
29 men perished in a vicious storm with hurricane force winds.

The ship and crew left from Duluth, Minnesota en route towards Detroit Michigan, with approximately 26,000 tons of Minnesota taconite.

Caught in the storm, and an hour from safe harbor in Sault St. Marie, Ontario, it’s theorized that the good ship began taking on water due to structural damage, grounding on a shoal, topside damage, or a combination of all three.

With this sinking, Great Lakes shipping was changed to ensure safety and efficiency. With depth finders, GPS, emergency beacons, and U.S. Coast guard inspections being required by law, among other changes.

May they rest in peace, finding safe harbor beneath the waves.
