➥ The meaning of stop [+ infinitive & ing]
■ Some words, like stop, have different meanings when they're followed by infinitive and gerund (ing)
•To stop to do sth (= to stop sth you're doing in order to do sth else)
•To stop doing sth (= to quit sth you're doing so that you no longer do it)

*Note that the first one carries both meanings, the (ing) is just reduced.
E.g. I stopped to hear what he was saying (= I stopped talking/walking etc. to hear what he was saying...)
