MIT researchers developed a new robotic gripping method that lets robots lift heavy yet fragile objects without crushing or slipping.

Traditional grippers must choose between being soft enough to avoid damage or stiff enough to hold weight, which usually causes failure at one stage. MIT’s solution, called loop closure grasping, avoids this tradeoff by starting as a flexible open loop that can snake around clutter, then locking into a closed loop around the object.

Once closed, the load is carried mainly by tension rather than pressure, like a sling, allowing the gripper to stay very soft while still holding strongly. A prototype using inflatable “vine” beams, a clamp, and a winch successfully performed difficult tasks such as lifting a 6.8 kg kettlebell and retrieving objects from three meters away.

⚡️ A modular robot from chinese company limx dynamics.

Regardless of whether this concept prevails, it clearly demonstrates the creativity of Chinese developers.

Similarly, the limitations of AI chips have forced AI developers to find new ways to make their models as efficient as possible.
