Bill Gates ha chiuso un occhio sulla condanna per crimini sessuali di Jeffrey Epstein perché sperava che il finanziere ben collegato lo avrebbe aiutato ad assicurarsi il premio Nobel per la pace, ha detto al DailyBeast un ex dipendente della Fondazione Gates.

L'ex dipendente ha detto al DailyBeast che il team di comunicazione della Fondazione era consapevole che gli incontri di Gates con Epstein potevano avere "rischi reputazionali", tuttavia gli è stato detto che "era una manovra per cercare di ottenere il premio Nobel per la pace per Gates".

"Già allora, la gente sapeva che questo tizio [Epstein] non era pulito", ha detto al DailyBeast lo staffer, rimasto anonimo.

"Lui [Gates] pensava che Jeffrey sarebbe stato in grado di aiutarlo, che avrebbe conosciuto le persone giuste o un qualche modo per massaggiare le cose, in modo da poter ottenere il premio Nobel per la pace", hanno aggiunto.

Gates ha iniziato a incontrarsi con Epstein nel 2011, tre anni dopo che il potente finanziere è stato condannato per aver sollecitato la prostituzione da un minore. Melinda Gates ha riferito di essersi opposta fortemente agli incontri del marito con il finanziere.

Secondo l'ex dipendente, il premio Nobel per la pace "è ciò che Bill vuole più di ogni altra cosa al mondo", ha riportato The DailyBeast. Negli anni precedenti, il co-fondatore di Microsoft avrebbe tenuto alcuni dipendenti di guardia il giorno del premio nel caso in cui fosse stato premiato con l'ultimo riconoscimento.

"Penso che alla fine sia rimasto deluso che non abbia funzionato", ha aggiunto l'ex dipendente.

Il rapporto arriva diversi mesi dopo che il giornale norvegese DNMagasinet ha riferito che nel marzo 2013, Epstein aveva accompagnato Gates a casa dell'allora presidente del Comitato Nobel Thorbjørn Jagland a Strasburgo, in Francia. Gates è stato propagandato come destinatario del prestigioso premio in quel momento.

Un portavoce di Gates ha detto al DailyBeast: "Mentre un premio Nobel sarebbe certamente un grande onore, è falso affermare che Bill Gates era 'ossessionato' dall'onore, l'ha posto come obiettivo, o ha fatto campagna per esso in qualsiasi modo.

"Se Epstein aveva un piano o una motivazione per inserirsi in qualsiasi processo relativo a qualsiasi premio o onorificenza per conto di Gates, né Gates né nessuno dei suoi collaboratori era a conoscenza delle sue intenzioni e avrebbero rifiutato qualsiasi offerta di assistenza", hanno aggiunto.
