Police in China’s Chizhou city have announced they arrested 8 suspects over a scam involving $7.9MN in digital assets. Nearly $1MN of crypto, luxury cars and villas were all seized in a December raid.

The illegal operation involved laundering investments that were made into an anonymous cryptocurrency pool without consent - a scam know as a "rug-pull" - which accounted for 37% ($2.8BN) of illicit revenue in China last year, up from 1% in 2020.

OpenSea transaction volume spikes to new ATH

The largest NFT marketplace OpenSea has just broken its monthly transaction volume record of $3.5 billion with two weeks left to spare for this month. OpenSea had reached its previous ATH in August last year when transactions on its platform hit $3.42 billion.

While this is not entirely surprising, the trading volume on OpenSea had drastically dropped to as low as $2.37 billion in November last year, but the level of renewed interest in NFTs has helped to push its volume back to its previous height.

“I would say it is only going to be a few days, and it’s not going to be as brutal as last year,” a weather forecaster predicted. “It doesn’t look like it is going to be a prolonged event,” he added.

In February 2021 Texas suffered a major power crisis as a result of three severe winter storms. The storms caused the worst energy infrastructure crisis in the state’s history.

CNN mocked for creating team dedicated to “covering misinformation”

The network has been ripped online after Business Managing Editor Alex Koppelman announced on Twitter CNN was creating a special team for “covering misinformation.”

"I'm hiring 3 people for a new CNN team dedicated to covering misinformation," Koppelman tweeted. “What do we mean by covering misinformation? Really it’s about covering reality,” he continued.

Twitter users immediately heckled Koppelman’s announcement. “You don’t normally hear left-wing networks hiring staff to call out its fellow anchors,” one wrote. “Beyond parody,” replied another.

A Muslim activist in the "most surveilled place in the world" - India's Telangana State, home to over 600k cameras, and the country's HQ for Amazon, Microsoft and IBM - has filed a lawsuit against the use of facial recognition technology.

Police can access the database via an app on their phones, and claim they only use it to track "suspected criminals," while the election commission can also use the system.

The Indian govt is rolling out one of the world's largest AI-run facial recognition systems, while a planned data protection law will provide govt agencies wide exemptions on the basis of national security.
