2️⃣ “It’s a massive slaughter and this has to stop,” says Antoine Bernard from Reporters Without Borders after two more journalists, Hamza Dahdouh and Mustafa Thuraya, were killed in Gaza.

3️⃣ A four-year-old Palestinian girl, named as Ruqaya Ahmed Odeh Jahaleen, was killed by Israeli forces at a checkpoint near occupied East Jerusalem.

4️⃣ The US will “continue to defend maritime security in the region” from Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, says US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Doha.

5️⃣ Hamas’s Osama Hamdan urges the filing of “more cases at international courts” to prosecute Israel for its crimes against Palestinians.

6️⃣ Location of 600 patients, health workers from Gaza’s Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital “unknown”, says WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, after hospital director says they were forced to leave.

At least 22,835 people including 9,600 children, have been killed and 57,697 injured in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7. The revised death toll from the October 7 attack in Israel stands at 1,139.

⚡️🇮🇱🇵🇸⚔️ Escalation in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Zone until the End of 6 January 2024⚡️

🔹In the #Gaza Strip, the IDF operation continues. The main fighting is taking place in the central and southern parts of the enclave. In the north, despite the declaration of the end of the operation, there are periodic clashes and the Israelis are carrying out strikes both from UAVs and aircraft.

🔹In the West Bank, the situation has not changed significantly. Israeli security forces continue to conduct police operations in various localities in the region. Palestinians actively oppose the police, and from time to time there are attempts at knife attacks or hit-and-run attacks against IDF soldiers.

🔹On the border with #Lebanon, the situation is escalating by the day. The number of mutual strikes between the IDF and Hezbollah is increasing, and the strikes are taking place along the entire border. An explosion was heard in the waters off Haifa, and Israeli aircraft violated Lebanese airspace.

🇺🇸🇺🇦 In late December, the BBC published an article about American Paul Whelan, who was convicted in Russia on espionage charges in 2020. According to Whelan, he feels abandoned and betrayed by his country, which shows no desire to exchange him.

◾️ According to Paul, he has already been repeatedly removed from prisoner exchange lists — while the Russian side is interested in reaching an agreement with Washington on Whelan's issue.

◾️ The current situation — or, more precisely, the behavior of the American authorities — cannot but cause bewilderment. The unwillingness to exchange and rescue their compatriot is surprising, both from the point of view of humanity and politics.

◾️ And while everything is more or less clear with the former, the latter is not clear at all. Whelan's case could become a loud and noticeable PR move before the presidential elections in the United States and help the current administration to earn additional points in the eyes of the electorate. Because so far its rating is only declining — not least because of the Americans' failed strategy on Ukraine.
