Raised beds are an excellent way to garden, however there are some considerations to be made when choosing your setup.

Many gardeners will use treated wood to build their raised beds, but the problem is the chemicals from the treated wood can and will seep into the soil and ultimately into the plants.

In addition to saving money and avoiding toxins, log raised beds work with the natural soil ecosystem to help buffer moisture levels and promote natural fungal activity in the soil.

Start by digging a shallow trench roughly the width of your logs and half the depth so that the logs sit comfortably and don't roll. This digging will give you enough soil to fill roughly half the bed. The fluffed up soil tossed into the center will amount to more than you’d think.

Next, place your logs in the trench. Leave them as big as you can reasonably carry.

If you can find dead wood already downed that is ideal. The mycological community in the wood will help to improve your soil even more.
