October 25 is the one-year anniversary of the military coup in Sudan. Today, our thoughts are with our anarchist comrades there as they face off with the forces of repression.

For background on the situation there, you could start with this interview:

The Billionaire and the Anarchists

We trace Twitter from its grassroots origins as a protest tool for activists to Elon Musk's acquisition—sketching a history of the capitalist takeover of the internet in microcosm in order to strategize for the future.

Today we remember Zhlobitsky Mikhail Vasilyevich, also known as Valerian Panov, a 17-year-old student at the Arkhangelsk Polytechnic University and an anarchist. Four years ago, he died in an attack on the headquarters of the FSB (the Russian secret police) in Arkhangelsk.

By 2018, meaningful protest organizing had become virtually impossible under Putin, thanks to the FSB fabricating cases and torturing people to force them to sign confessions. This young anarchist's effort showed the desperation and dedication of a person who refused to accept the situation.

You can read his statement here:

It's good to see Bolsonaro lose. But rather than the defeat of fascism from the left, the Brazilian election signifies the reconstitution of the center—a return to a 2013 without hope of positive change, in which radical opposition is treated as if it were aiding the far right.

Bolsonaro lost the most polarized election of the democratic era, but only by 1.8%. Nearly 60 million people support him—and his allies have won the most positions in the Senate. As in Chile, truckers blockaded highways demanding a military coup.

In Brazil as in the US, politics functions like a ratchet: the far right push public policy and permissible discourse to the right, while the Workers Party and Democrats try to acquire power by chasing the political center, ceding more and more ground.

In this context, many of Lula's supporters urged anarchists and anti-fascists to abandon the streets, fearing that unrest could help Bolsonaro. But this left a vacuum that enabled Bolsonaro's base to continue to recruit and escalate.

It remains to be seen who in Brazil will be satisfied with a new management that seeks to nostalgically emulate the moderate advances that occurred over a decade ago. For our part—as a collective based in Brazil, in the US, and elsewhere—we support those building grassroots direct resistance to the far right and capitalism both in Brazil and worldwide.

The risks in Brazil are similar to those in the United States after the 2020 election. The center is reconstituting itself further to the right while the far right keeps escalating in the street and the left demobilizes.

Don't stop fighting. Don't cede the streets. Build the power to defend your communities. Create networks and infrastructure. Become ungovernable. 🏴🏴🏴

Comrades from the No Borders Team in Poland organize to support refugees from the Mideast and North Africa in defiance of racist border policies and police. They are raising money right now:

Please help them—they are trying to do a tremendous amount of important work with very few resources.

You can read about some of their activities here:

The general strike in Oakland 11 years ago today—on November 2, 2011—marked the high point of the Occupy movement.

In this text, we compare and contrast it with the general strikes of the 20th century in order to identify what could make future general strikes succeed:

As the elections approach, it's a good time to emphasize the importance of continuous local organizing and direct action.

Trump administration officials promoted baseless conspiracy theories to manufacture a fake "domestic terrorist threat" for Trump's political gain.

On Donald Trump's instructions, the Department of Homeland Security launched an operation that ensnared countless protesters in a failed attempt to fabricate evidence of an "antifa" terrorist plot.

We knew this already, but here is evidence of it in the corporate media.

Left Electoralism, Fascist Direct Action, and Anti-Fascist Resistance

https://crimethinc.com/BrazilElection2022

The clashes over the 2022 elections in Brazil offer a glimpse of a future in which the far right reorganizes while the institutional left continues to bet on a collapsing social order.

It is a mistake to count on the authorities to halt the resurgence of fascism, ceding the streets to the far right as a stage for action and recruiting. By the time this becomes clear to the institutional left, it will be too late to build a grassroots movement from scratch.

We salute those in Brazil who take direct action against fascism and capitalism in all their forms. The struggle continues. 🏴

In fall 2020, the New York Times spread fear that street protests would cost Biden the election.

But when they actually crunched the numbers, they had to admit that more of those who cited the protests as a factor in their decision voted for Biden:

https://nytimes.com/2020/11/07/us/black-lives-matter-protests.html

This is important because liberals have tried to overwrite the popular memory of the George Floyd uprising with their own defeatist narratives.

But if not for the riots, most people would never have heard George Floyd's name, nor mobilized against police violence—nor been prepared to respond to a potential Trump coup.

The truth is, liberals like those at the New York Times are so anxious about losing control of the streets that they're willing to risk far-right victories.

But social change doesn't come from being passive. It comes from taking action together—and that even spills over into idle activities like voting.
