We are a rebel alliance—a decentralized network pledged to anonymous collective action—a breakout from the prisons of our age. We strive to reinvent our lives and our world according to the principles of self-determination and mutual aid.

The general strike in Oakland 11 years ago today—on November 2, 2011—marked the high point of the Occupy movement.

In this text, we compare and contrast it with the general strikes of the 20th century in order to identify what could make future general strikes succeed:

As the elections approach, it's a good time to emphasize the importance of continuous local organizing and direct action.

Beyond the Rube Goldberg machine of representative democracy, what can we do together?

Whoever is elected, let's be ungovernable.

Trump administration officials promoted baseless conspiracy theories to manufacture a fake "domestic terrorist threat" for Trump's political gain.

On Donald Trump's instructions, the Department of Homeland Security launched an operation that ensnared countless protesters in a failed attempt to fabricate evidence of an "antifa" terrorist plot.

We knew this already, but here is evidence of it in the corporate media.

Left Electoralism, Fascist Direct Action, and Anti-Fascist Resistance

https://crimethinc.com/BrazilElection2022

The clashes over the 2022 elections in Brazil offer a glimpse of a future in which the far right reorganizes while the institutional left continues to bet on a collapsing social order.

It is a mistake to count on the authorities to halt the resurgence of fascism, ceding the streets to the far right as a stage for action and recruiting. By the time this becomes clear to the institutional left, it will be too late to build a grassroots movement from scratch.

We salute those in Brazil who take direct action against fascism and capitalism in all their forms. The struggle continues. 🏴

In fall 2020, the New York Times spread fear that street protests would cost Biden the election.

But when they actually crunched the numbers, they had to admit that more of those who cited the protests as a factor in their decision voted for Biden:

https://nytimes.com/2020/11/07/us/black-lives-matter-protests.html

This is important because liberals have tried to overwrite the popular memory of the George Floyd uprising with their own defeatist narratives.

But if not for the riots, most people would never have heard George Floyd's name, nor mobilized against police violence—nor been prepared to respond to a potential Trump coup.

The truth is, liberals like those at the New York Times are so anxious about losing control of the streets that they're willing to risk far-right victories.

But social change doesn't come from being passive. It comes from taking action together—and that even spills over into idle activities like voting.

Today marks 100 years since Arseny Avraamov's "Symphony of Sirens" in Baku, described in our first book, Days of War, Nights of Love (https://crimethinc.com/days_of_war).

"On this day intrepid Russian experimental composer Arseny Mikhailovich Avraamov ascended to the roof of a tall building and directed a concert of factory sirens, steam whistles, artillery, and everything else in the city of Baku capable of making loud noise; for the climax of the piece, the entire fleet of the Caspian Sea joined in with their foghorns."

You can hear a recreation of the symphony here:

Please support Russian anti-war protesters! Here is a fundraiser for them:

https://avtonom.org/en/news/support-russian-anti-war-prisoners-0

And here is some background on the current situation for anti-war protesters in Russia:

https://crimethinc.com/RussiaMobilization

“The only way this war could have been averted—and likely the only way it can be stopped now without tremendous loss of life on both sides—would be if a powerful and internationalist anti-war movement broke out in Russia, destabilizing Putin’s government... If the war drags on indefinitely, or is concluded by the brute force of nationalist militarism, that will drive people on all sides of the conflict into nationalist and militarist camps for decades to come. But if the war in Ukraine comes to an end as a result of the rebellion and solidarity of ordinary people, that could set a precedent for more rebellion, more mutiny, more solidarity."

Od demokracji do wolności

https://crimethinc.com/2016/04/29/od-demokracji-do-wolnosci-3
