“We Are Not Martyrs”—A Message from Serge, Who Survived Attempted Murder at the Hands of French Police

A translation of the first message from Serge since French police grievously injured him along with many other people during a protest in Sainte-Soline on March 25, 2023. Serge spent a month in a coma after a police officer shot him in the head with a grenade. We are tremendously relieved that he has recovered enough to release this message.

Yesterday, French police arrested 18 people accused of association with Soulevements de la Terre (“Earth Uprisings”), one of the movements that participated in the protests in Sainte-Soline. Today is the date that French interior minister Gérald Darmanin set for the state-ordered dissolution of the Soulevements de la Terre. As usual, the state endangers the lives of those it supposedly protects, blames the victims of its attacks, and then takes steps to silence the survivors.

Today, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Michael Register announced that he is stepping down, being demoted to a job in Cobb County. Michael Register took over as the GBI Director last August. He has presided over controversial efforts to frame forest defenders and abolitionists as "domestic terrorists," doling out blanket terrorism charges for as little as sitting in a tree or posting on social media. Working with GBI in January, Georgia State Patrol killed forest defender Manuel Teran, known as Tortuguita, and GBI hastened to cover up the circumstances of the murder.

Yet this sadistic authoritarianism has not secured Michael Register the prestigious career he desired.

What's more, the Dekalb County District Attorney has withdrawn from 42 cases involving people accused of participating in the efforts to #StopCopCity. The Georgia state Attorney General is still pursuing charges.

This shows that fractures are finally opening up in the halls of power between Republicans and Democrats over how aggressively to prosecute those who protest against channeling a vast proportion of public resources into police militarization.

As tensions escalate between the Wagner private military force and the official Russian military, one can't help but think of the civil war that erupted in Sudan between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (described here: https://crimethinc.com/Sudan).

This is where militarization leads. As governments and corporations are relying more and more on brute force to suppress social unrest and channeling more and more resources towards police and private security towards that end, they are creating the conditions for horrific civil wars on an ever-widening scale.

This gives us another lens through which to read the events of January 6, 2021 in Washington, DC (see https://crimethinc.com/January6). It also drives home the importance of the fight to #StopCopCity and block the militarization of the police.

Vladimir Putin has some nerve to say that Yevgeny Prigozhin's rebellion is "pushing the country toward anarchy and fratricide."

Torturing and assassinating dissidents was fratricide. Invading Ukraine was fratricide. Anarchy is the opposite of fratricide, the opposite of civil war: it is the condition that prevails when people do not compete to rule each other. Totalitarianism always leads to bloody conflicts for power.

Since the statements that we published from anarchists in Russia were composed, Yevgeny Prigozhin has announced that his forces that were bound for Moscow have turned around, following negotiations with the ruler of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko.

Prigozhin may have bitten off more than he can chew, but so has Putin in Ukraine—or else he would not have needed Prigozhin in the first place. It remains to be seen how this crisis will play out in Russia in the long run. In Turkey, the failed coup attempt of 2016 enabled President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to consolidate power, but any sign of weakness and disunity can only imperil Putin. The volatile and unpredictable situation that our comrades predict in Russia is likely still ahead of us. It will be for the best if the forces contending in it are not two rival totalitarian despots, or at least, not *only* them.
