Regarding the Eviction of the Self-Organized Refugee Camp in Lavrio, Greece

On July 5, 2023, the Greek government evicted a Kurdish refugee camp in Lavrio, Greece. The camp had existed for many decades, serving as an important center of organizing in southeastern Europe. Turkeys’ war on Kurdish people, the Greek government’s war on autonomous spaces, and the European Union’s war on migrants all intersect in this operation.

In this analysis, Beja Protner shows the connections between the different forms of systematic oppression involved.

Tomorrow will mark three years since the outbreak of the 2020 uprising in Belarus, when tens of thousands of people took the streets demanding the fall of Alexander Lukashenko's regime. Anarchists played an essential role in these events, being one of the only organized networks still active under his totalitarian rule.

Nine years ago today, in Ferguson, Missouri, Darren Wilson murdered Michael Brown, an unarmed teenager—one of hundreds of cases every year in which a white police officer kills a young Black man in the United States.

Michael Brown's community responded immediately. For a week and a half, an ungovernable revolt raged in on the streets of Ferguson as angry residents and their supporters used a variety of tactics including arson, property destruction, looting, and gunfire to keep police at a distance and impose consequences for the murder. This set a precedent for subsequent rebellions around the country, culminating with the countrywide upheaval in response to the murder of George Floyd.

To understand the events of 2020 better, we can revisit the uprising in Ferguson and the practices and discourses that emerged in those days.

Il campo esisteva da molti decenni ed era un importante centro di organizzazione nell’Europa sud-orientale. Le guerre della Turchia contro i curdi, del governo greco contro gli spazi autonomi e dell’Unione Europea contro i migranti si sono intersecate in questa operazione. Tonight we give thanks that six years ago, on August 12, 2017, courageous people from around the southeastern United States gathered in Charlottesville, Virginia to prevent fascists from building a united street movement. At that time, few outside the anarchist and anti-fascist movements really understood the threat that the fascists gathering in Charlottesville represented. Afterwards, it was clear to all.

This was a costly victory—one person gave her life, and many others suffered life-threatening injuries. But if people had not confronted the fascists that day, they might have gained considerably more numbers and power, killing and injuring many more people.

En juin 2023, dans la ville de Nanterre, en banlieue parisienne, la police a brutalement assassiné un adolescent du nom de Nahel Merzouk, poursuivant ainsi un modèle de violence post-coloniale dirigé contre une partie de la population française traitée comme des citoyen.ne.s de seconde zone. En réponse, des milliers de personnes dans les banlieues de Paris et d’autres villes françaises se sont révoltées pendant plusieurs jours, attaquant les mairies et les commissariats de police, pillant les magasins et se défendant contre la police. Dans la réflexion suivante, un participant aux mouvements de ces dernières années revient sur la révolte de juin 2023 et les mouvements qui l’ont précédée, en explorant les limites qu’ils ont atteintes et en s’interrogeant sur ce qu’il faudrait pour qu’ils aboutissent à une transformation révolutionnaire.
