Today, faith leaders joined other members of the community in blocking construction vehicles at the site where the city government of Atlanta is destroying the forest in order to build a police militarization facility known as Cop City.

This comes on the heels of a RICO indictment charging 61 people with "racketeering" for allegedly participating in the movement to #StopCopCity.

They have not broken the spirit of the movement.

Today, Dmitry Petrov would have been 34 years old.

Dmitry organized against the autocratic government of Russia until he was forced to flee the country with the secret police looking for him. He traveled to Rojava and helped publish a series of books about the revolutionary experiment there, participated in uprisings in Ukraine and Belarus, organized a clandestine network to fight against Putin, and was finally killed last April fighting against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He always impressed us with his humility and courage.

Дмитрий организовывал выступления против самодержавного правительства России, пока не был вынужден бежать из страны, где его разыскивала ФСБ. Он отправился в Рожаву и помог издать серию книг о её революционном эксперименте, участвовал в восстаниях в Украине и в Беларуси, организовал подпольную сеть для борьбы с Путиным и, наконец, был убит в апреле этого года, сражаясь против российского вторжения в Украину. Он всегда впечатлял нас своей скромностью и храбростью.

In response to the attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center 22 years ago, the US showed that there is no tragedy that government can't make worse.

Neoconservatives led a bipartisan push to invade Afghanistan and Iraq. Congress passed the Patriot Act. The FBI stepped up operations targeting Muslims, but also environmental activists. Politicians militarized the police.

The occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan cost nearly a million lives, driving more people to join the jihadists. The rise of the Islamic State a decade later showed that the invasions had only strengthened the forces that neoconservatives claimed to be attacking. The Taliban recapturing Afghanistan in 2021 confirmed the pointlessness of the invasions.

By any metric, the stability of the US government has eroded since 2001. Every time the authorities escalate the conflicts they expose us to and the control they hope to wield over us, they are taking a risk.

One year ago today, the Iranian Guidance Patrol police arrested Jina Mahsa Amini. Allegedly, she was not wearing the hijab in accordance with Iranian state policy. After Jina died at their hands, people across Iran took to the streets, confronting the police and opening up spaces of ungovernable freedom.
