Nel 2011, all’età di ventidue anni, Tortuga è stato gravemente ferito durante un tentativo di attacco a una banca. A causa dell’esplosione, Tortuga perse una mano e riportò gravi danni all’altra mano, agli occhi, alla pelle e ai polmoni. Dimostrando un’ammirevole determinazione, è sopravvissuto alla dura prova e ha superato le aspettative per quanto riguarda la velocità e la gravità della sua guarigione.

Due giorni fa, mentre Tortuga lavorava a Santiago, è entrato in contatto con dei cavi elettrici ed è rimasto ucciso da una scarica elettrica. Questa tragedia dimostra che la cosa più pericolosa non è la resistenza. Piuttosto, la cosa più pericolosa, quella che uccide più persone, è la vita ordinaria alla mercé del capitalismo. A thriving gay underground existed in Germany before the rise of the Third Reich. Some of the participants went on to carry out some of the fiercest resistance to the Nazis.

As fascism is on the rise today, we revisit this history, seeking tactics and inspiration for our own troubled times.

As demonstrators gather outside this week's Democratic National Convention in Chicago to protest the Democratic Party's continuing support of genocide in Gaza, it's a good time to revisit earlier anarchist mobilizations against the conventions.

In the years 2000, 2004, and 2008, anarchists around the United States converged on both the DNC and the RNC, asserting an anti-capitalist and anti-state position in political discourse and exerting pressure against the capitalist and militarist agenda that both parties share. These mobilizations helped establish countrywide networks and precedents. For example, the organizing against the Republican National Convention in St. Paul in 2008 produced the St. Paul Principles, a framework legitimizing a diversity of tactics, which helped resolve conflicts between pacifists and proponents of direct action.

There is a direct line of historical transmission from the convention protests to the George Floyd Uprising of 2020. A year of organizing for the 2008 mobilizations under the umbrella of Unconventional Action produced chapters around the country. UA in the Bay kept organizing after the conventions, and participated in the revolt when Oscar Grant was murdered, setting a precedent for the movement against police and white supremacy that burst into the public consciousness in 2014.

A decade ago, in the wake of the Occupy movement and a new wave of interest in queer and insurrectionist anarchism, we published this two-zine set as a venue for experimental thinking and the creative arts. To bring the whimsy of 2012 into dialogue with the calamities of the present, we've prepared a new limited printing of them.

Terror Incognita is a three-part argument for rejecting all fixed conceptions of identity in favor of a bold departure into the unknown. It challenges conventional notions about consent, violence, sexuality, desire, and freedom, pushing the discourse about these subjects far outside familiar territory.

Vortext is a joyous, absurdist, and outré rampage between the poles of philosophy, literature, and performance art. It has a strong personality. Whatever you're imagining, it's weirder than that.

Together, they make for a total of 148 pages of reading.

But letting state institutions clamp down on these platforms sets a bad precedent, which could endanger other means of encryption and communication in the future. If we let the state fight our battles for us, they will use the same approaches to repress us, too. It would be better to abandon, undermine, abolish, and replace Telegram and Twitter ourselves.

O governo francês prendeu o CEO do Telegram, Pavel Durov, enquanto o governo brasileiro segue em frente com o bloqueio da rede anteriormente conhecida como Twitter.

Ambas as plataformas têm sido fundamentais para a organização da extrema-direita – por exemplo, a divulgação de alvos durante a recente onda de ataques fascistas na Grã-Bretanha. O Telegram afirma fornecer criptografia, mas, diferentemente do Tor e do Signal, se recusa a expor seu modelo ao escrutínio público.

O bilionário supremacista branco Elon Musk comprou o Twitter para devolver Donald Trump e vários neonazistas à plataforma. Embora Musk finja que o conflito com o judiciário brasileiro seja sobre “liberdade de expressão”, ele cumpre com entusiasmo as ordens de governos de extrema direita, como o governo da Índia, de suspender as contas dos organizadores de movimentos sociais. Ele baniu nossas páginas a pedido explícito de um fascista conhecido assim que assumiu o controle do Twitter. A sua prioridade é promover o fascismo – e não proteger o livre discurso.

Mas permitir que as instituições estatais reprimam estas plataformas abre um mau precedente, que pode pôr em perigo outros meios de encriptação e comunicação no futuro. Se deixarmos o Estado travar estas batalhas em nosso lugar, eles também usarão as mesmas estratégias para nos reprimir. Seria melhor abandonar e substituir nós mesmos o Telegram e o Twitter.
