The real gangsters don’t have to get their hands dirty—they have police and courts and prisons to do their dirty work for them. They don’t have to run drugs or guns or illegal gambling rings—they run everything else. They can afford to let us choose between politicians, so long as the political system itself enforces their privileges. Some of us can join their ranks if we’re enterprising enough, as long as we participate in their racket and play by their rules. Rivalries play out between different gangs, but nothing threatens gang rule. If a mafia took over our entire society, would it be any different?

For eight years, liberal politicians and pundits have counted on legal strategies to stop Donald Trump. Now that Trump has gained control of the executive and legislative branches of government and is consolidating control of the judicial branch, this isn't just naïve—it's counterproductive. It is past time to stop legitimizing the means they will use to repress resistance and focus on strategies that make use of the power we have when we act together, directly.

Today, on the two-year anniversary of a train crash in Greece that killed 57 people, a general strike took place to protest the complicity of the authorities in the conditions that caused the accident.
Many hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Athens. After the speeches ended, tens of thousands of people engaged in conflict with the police all afternoon, including anarchists, students, and others.
The train crash was the result of the same kind of capitalist kleptocracy that is afflicting people in the United States and elsewhere around the world. The more power the capitalist class concentrates in their hands, the more the rest of us will be exposed to danger in train and airplane crashes, pandemics, climate disasters, and other catastrophes. This is inevitable when there are vast disparities in wealth and power.
Like those in the streets of Athens, we must become capable of defending ourselves.
