Le 3 juin, une foule chassait des agents fédéraux qui procédaient à une descente dans une taqueria de Minneapolis. Le 4 juin, des affrontements éclataient contre des agents de l’ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] lors de raids à Chicago et à Grand Rapids. Et c’est à Los Angeles deux jours plus tard, que la ville s’est embrasée en réaction à une énième rafle de sans-papiers. Les affrontements, d’abord sporadiques, se sont ensuite étendus au reste de la mégalopole californienne. Ils sont encore en cours. Dans le récit qui suit, des participants racontent comment les habitants se sont organisés pour empêcher autant qu’ils le peuvent la police fédérale de kidnapper des gens de leur communauté.

Five years ago, on a platform now owned by a fascist, we posted this analysis:

Indeed, the security guard who killed two politicians in Minnesota today works for a company named Praetorian Guard.

It should also be lost on no one that the violence inflicted on Gaza, the West Bank, and Southern Lebanon is coming back to the United States in the form of political assassination.

The military occupations around the country and the parade in DC represent the culmination of a long-term shift from persuasion to coercion as disparities in wealth and power intensify. Autocracy requires mercenaries—despicable scum who sell their capacity to inflict violence to the highest bidder.

For autocracy to triumph, people must suppress their empathy, confining themselves to selfish materialism. Their aspirations to community must be replaced with jingoistic conformity. And many of them must be desperate enough for employment that they will accept a wage to do harm to others like themselves.

Yet as economic and ecological crises intensify, millions of people are waking up to the reality that solidarity and mutual aid offer our best chance of survival, whereas the mercenaries who serve autocracy—and the inclination to do violence for a wage—pose the greatest threat to us.

Thank you to everyone who resists. It requires considerably more courage and integrity to be a rebel than to be a mercenary. 🏴
