Kill Your Heroes

For December 30, the day commemorating Dr. José Rizal, icon of the Philippine Republic, we present a Filipino anarchist discussion about how the veneration of national heroes serves to suppress the same struggle they supposedly represent.

Minneapolis police killed Bayle Gelle's son, then raided his house in the middle of the night, terrorizing him, his wife, and their younger children.

Mitch McConnell and Nancy Pelosi are complaining about graffiti on their houses. They don't know how poor people live in the USA.

Trump is not going to seize power in a belated coup. Rather, the far-right convergence in DC this week is a means of building a base for the next round of street violence.

Conspiracy theories won't keep Trump in office—but they lay the groundwork to expand the fascist movement.

In this light, the liberal campaign to keep counter-protesters off the streets is especially irresponsible. They aim to consolidate their electoral victory to seize the initiative from last summer's ungovernable street movements, even if it means ceding the streets to fascists.

There are three sides in this struggle:

—nationalists + fascists

—anarchists + anti-fascists

—neoliberal centrists (including most Democrats and a few Republicans), who have very different concerns than those who will be worst impacted by the growing fascist street movement.

The White House has effectively brought back the Anarchist Exclusion Act of 1903/1918, seeking to exclude people from the US for simply for opposing fascism.

Incidentally, liberal politicians like Portland's Ted Wheeler are equally complicit in creating the conditions for this.

As the smoke clears in Washington, DC after Trump supporters stormed the capitol building—some preliminary thoughts.

Today's events will discredit Trump supporters in the eyes of centrists, but it will also push the envelope regarding what is acceptable. This may help the far right recruit locally countrywide and could normalize similar actions in the future.

The state clampdown after this will suppress freedoms across the board, targeting all forms of dissent. In Turkey, when Erdoğan put down a right-wing military coup, that paved the way for him to repress every form of protest.

State repression of the right will follow the playbook they use against our movements—incorporating reformist elements while isolating and destroying "extreme" elements.

If the only pressure on the government is from the far right, the state will make concessions to them.

Proponents of liberation should not remain spectators, hoping the state will protect us. Let's use this opportunity to reach out to others in our communities to organize against local far-right efforts and also against forthcoming state repression and economic/ecological crisis.

As the Republican Party fractures, a new political center is emerging—albeit much further to the right—while some Trump supporters are embracing outright fascism.
