Kazakhstan after the Uprising

https://cwc.im/Almaty2022

Following up our coverage of last week’s uprising in Kazakhstan, and seeking to clear up widespread confusion about the events, we have translated an array of perspectives on the situation from various Russian anarchist sources and interviewed two anarchists from Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan and the place where the fighting became most intense.
For background on anarcha-feminists in Kazakhstan, here is a photograph from the demonstration in Almaty on March 8, 2021 for International Women's Day. It was described as the most massive women's march since Kazakhstan became independent in 1991.

In the dead of winter, at the apex of a new wave of the pandemic, New York state is going to resume evicting people from their homes.

Landlords are hoping that our compassion and solidarity have eroded since 2020—that we will look away as people die.

In this case, as in some others (#colonialism), property ownership is just an alibi for profit-driven murder.

The wave of student walkouts looming around the US is the front line of the fight against a future in which human life is held cheap and we take mass casualties for granted.

Choose Your Own Adventure—J20 Protest Simulator

For tomorrow's #J20 anniversary, we recommend this educational learning tool based on the experiences one could have participating in the black bloc against Trump’s inauguration and the ensuing court cases.

Post your scores!
Today we give thanks that, 5 years ago, on the first day of Donald Trump's presidency, several hundred brave people converged at Logan Circle in DC to take on 28,000 cops—and fascists like Richard Spencer—in order to confront Trump's inauguration and demonstrate the tactics that millions would eventually be compelled to adopt against the Trump administration:

Had the prosecutor set a precedent for conspiracy convictions in the ensuing cases, however, the Trump era would have gone much differently. Arguably, the most important battle was fought in the courts:

https://cwc.im/J20legal
As we wrote when the first round of J20 defendants were found innocent:

"What would constitute real justice for the J20 defendants? If we understand justice as retribution—poetic justice—the police, prosecutors, the judge, and all the other state officials who are implicated in the past ten months of intimidation would be subjected to the same treatment they have inflicted. The police officers would be rounded up and imprisoned; the detective who lied to the grand jury would have his own life ruined by calumny he was powerless to counteract; the prosecutors would be publicly humiliated and forced to face the possibility of spending the rest of their lives in prison. Donald Trump would walk across the desert on a broken ankle, pursued by helicopters and armed men with dogs, before dying of dehydration, terrified and alone, within miles of hospital facilities—as he has forced others to do in hopes of rejoining their families."

We're grateful for the efforts of everyone who does their part to discourage openly fascist groups like Patriot Front from recruiting.

https://itsgoingdown.org/antifascist-action-against-pf-dc-communique/

"While members of Patriot Front strutted awkwardly along the National Mall in Washington D.C., antifascists were able to take advantage of their logistics chokepoints, thanks to intel provided by infiltrators inside the fascist organization. Their transportation troubles that day were not simply due to poor planning or wayward drivers: they were a direct result of coordinated strikes on rented trucks and personal vehicles by anonymous antifascists."

"The antifascist movement remains the only material force pushing back against these groups actively targeting our communities and openly calling for mass State repression, murder, and genocide."
“We are often defeated. However, no matter how often beaten, we cannot forget the joy we felt during the fight. The pleasure of stretching our will power. The pleasure of trying out our own strength. The pleasure of seeing a manifestation of real comradely emotions among comrades. The pleasure of seeing the world clearly divided into friend and foe. And above all of these various pleasures, the pleasure of seeing faintly and gradually our own future and society’s future. The pleasure of seeing an improvement in our own personalities.”

We're just now getting started shipping out the orders that have come in since a fire destroyed our mail-order space last month.

Many of the books and posters are still out of print. We'll be replacing them over the coming months.
In Russia, Ukraine, and the US, rulers who won't die in the trenches are preparing to throw away people's lives just to gain leverage in geopolitical competitions.

We should fight those who would make us die on their behalf, not each other.

"In response to the machinations of governments, we must identify and resist every effort to turn us against each other. We should build solidarity across national, ethnic, and religious lines while doing everything we can to topple authoritarian governments from Washington, DC to Moscow. Our hope is that revolutionary movements will break out on both sides of every border.

"Escalations in state violence are calculated to make this impossible—to substitute war for revolution. But in a world headed towards ever more diffuse wars, goaded on by nationalist strongmen, our best chance of survival is to build ties between combative social movements. Let us fight those who would make us die on their behalf, not each other."
The Russian state is once again the guarantor of oppression throughout the region, backing dictatorships in Belarus and Kazakhstan by military force—treating Russian lives as expendable, too.

Against all wars—against all governments.

Ukrainian capitalists and politicians benefit from being able to deflect attention to the threat of Russia. But the only thing that could make war impossible would be revolutionary movements on both sides.

Against all governments.

The Russian state is initiating military exercises in Belarus, preparing to prop up Lukashenko's authoritarian government by force at the expense of ordinary Russians and Belarusians.

Against all wars—against all governments.

While German politicians wash their hands of war in Ukraine, anarchists in Germany, Russia, and Ukraine aim to build solidarity across national, ethnic, and religious lines against all wars and governments—it's our only hope of survival.

Curious why new labor struggles haven't really taken off, despite the conditions being so ripe for them?

Last month, the graduate worker strike at Columbia University was the biggest strike in the US. But to make the strike possible, they first had to confront and overthrow the union bureaucracy from within:
