Today marks 23 years since June 18, 1999, the first breakthrough day of action in the movement against capitalist globalization.

An outgrowth of the free festival movement, Earth First!, and Reclaim the Streets, the Carnival against Capitalism coincided with the G8 summit in Birmingham and anti-capitalist demonstrations in 40 countries.

Thousands of demonstrators converged at the Liverpool Street train station, where organizers distributed masks in four different colors. The participants broke up into four different marches in order to divide police. The marches converged on the London International Financial Futures Exchange (LIFFE), where they adorned the walls with graffiti, disabled surveillance cameras, and set up sound systems for DJs and punk bands to perform. A raucous afternoon of dancing and street fighting followed, during which participants bricked up the front of the LIFFE building, trashed its ground floor, and nearly destroyed the London Stock Exchange.

Reach For The Sky: Anarchist Analysis On Mass Shootings, The So-Called Crime Wave, And The Deepening Crisis

This zine from It's Going Down includes our text, "Their Guns Won’t Protect You, but They Can Get You Killed," arguing that the epidemic of mass shootings in the US cannot be stopped by more policing or more gun control, but only by radical social change.

As millions celebrate the election of Colombia's first leftist president and first Black vice president, we are waiting to see what this will mean for the grassroots movements that paved the way for this moment.

Something similar to the victory of Gustavo Petro and Francia Márquez in Colombia happened in Chile last year, where the street movements of 2019 paved the way for Gabriel Boric to win the presidential election of 2021.

But Boric then aligned himself with the police against the movements he came from.

Media outlets of every stripe are describing Colombian president-elect Gustavo Petro as an ex-guerrilla. To us, this doesn't mean much, one way or the other—Dilma Rousseff was also an ex-guerrilla, but her administration presided over neoliberal reforms in Brazil.

There's no substitute for building real power through grassroots organizing. That is the only kind of power that cannot be taken away by an election or coup—as many in Latin America know all too well. While some celebrate the election in Colombia, our hearts are with those who are still facing charges from the courageous actions of 202

The Gezi Resistance, June 2013

https://cwc.im/Gezi2013

In June 2013, a powerful resistance movement erupted in Turkey around the defense of Gezi Park.

Today, as Erdoğan takes advantage of Turkey’s current leverage within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to plan another invasion of Syria, it is important to remember that he had to suppress powerful social movements in Turkey in order to cement control. Such social movements still represent our best hope for peace and social change—in Turkey, Syria, and all around the world.

We explore the events of the uprising, reflecting on this high-water mark of resistance in Turkey from the perspective of 2022.

"For consciousness to be able to imagine, it must be able to escape from the world by its very nature, it must be able to stand back from the world by its own efforts. In a word, it must be free."
-Jean-Paul Sartre, 1940 (during the Nazi occupation)

Keep dreaming, keep fighting.

https://crimethinc.com/posters/mvvt-zv-kt-qpytlyzm
