The impressive evolution of #F1 Floors (2005 vs 2023)

💡2 causes:
- Development
- Ground effect: Instead of being 'flat', the floor now has 'Venturi Channels' producing significant downforce

Cars are much larger:
Wheelbase: 3050mm ➡️ 3600mm
Width: 1796mm ➡️ 2000mm

31% more area! 😳

McLaren made a HUGE step forward in all areas!

Suzuka:
+7 km/h top speed📈
+6 km/h fast turn📈
+1 km/h in the slowest turn📈
-1.02 s laptime📈🤯

What an improvement!🏆

Will they get a win this season?🤔

Even though Mercedes' high-ish drag should not help them in Austin, the floor upgrade they are bringing there might change the outcomes

If the floor ends up increasing its downforce, whey could (finally) run a less loaded rear wing and move up the order concerning top speed
2
In 2022, Aston ran a very loaded rear wing, which explains part of the top speed gain they had this year

Despite that, their speed in the high speed corners was lower

So the car is now much more efficient (less drag, slightly more downforce), but has a mech grip problem

Aston Martin 9th best car?!?😳🤔
The message 'Aston Martin 9th best car?!?😳🤔' was out of disbelief in response to a journalist showing the simulation laptimes. I don't know why the tweet I replied to is not showing

As I'm an EU resident, you would NOT see me on the platform anymore (not even with a VPN)💔

I hope this will amount to nothing, but I definitely see a pattern here😢

EXTENSIVE UPDATES BY HAAS!🧐

Old (Top) vs New (Bottom)

>'RedBull-Style' inlets (letterbox shape)
>The outer shape of sidepods is similar to Ferrari's, but they feature visible waterlides and no inwash. Undercut is modest, due to the Side-Impact Structure

Interesting!😏

Finally: Wing Thursday! Let's go:

💡Rear Wings for #AustinGP

Load levels:
🔵 RB: High
⚫️ Merc: High
🔴 Ferrari: 🔼 Medium-high
🟣 Alpine: ▶️ Medium

Higher load:
Better cornering/braking
Better tyre wear
Slower on straights
Higher battery consumption

What’s your prediction?🤔

Cars like RB, who have a lower baseline drag, can afford to run more loaded wings.

Mercedes is probably betting on improved tyre wear in the race and accepted the higher drag this will induce.

Alpine’s less loaded wing might be due to their power deficit.

💡McL vs Aston

Load levels:

🟢 Aston: High
🟠 McL: Medium-High

Aston’s updates reduced its drag (but its downforce stopped being top-notch) and can afford to run a very loaded wing

McL is now good all-around and works well with different wings.

Aston started the year over TWO SECONDS quicker than in '22!

Bahrain:
+9km/h top speed📈
+14km/h fast turn📈🤯
-5km/h in the slowest turn (ALO's 'brake late, accelerate early' approach)
-2.44 s laptime📈😳

The '22 car improved throughout the season
The '23 got worse!

Earlier this year, there were rumours about Aston being hurt by a clampdown on flexible front wings.
Alonso, instead, pointed his fingers at the new tyre introduced mid-season.
