Practice 2 - Time at Maximum Throttle:
Aston Martin’s performance in FP2 is hard to decipher🤔
They had the highest top speed (323km/h) despite their loaded rear wing BUT they could stay full throttle more than any other team, which is usually correlated with less power, more drag and better grip.
Despite all these positives, STR’s gap to LEC was over 0.5s.
💡My opinion, comparing STR’s telemetry to LEC’s:
Aston’s DRS has improved significantly, providing an excellent top speed when active.
They still have significant drag without it.
The PU doesn’t seem to be turned up too much, while the grip is average to good.
How do you interpret these contradictory data? 👀

Each car's characteristics - #AustralianGP Quali
Right side: higher mean speed (better performance👌)
Upper side: better top speed (lower drag🚀)
🟡Red Bull was extremely efficient, but🟠McL was quick DESPITE their terrible top speed!
Aston and Mercedes performed similarly

📊Best sectors in Qualifying
- Ferrari was the most competitive car in Sector 1 (P1 and P3).
- The very fast Sector 2 (for the most part a long straight with a DRS zone) was RedBull’s playground.
- In Sector 3 (the slowest) the two cars were equally quick, while McL struggled more.
Hamilton’a exclusion from Q3 had to do with an uncompetitive performance in Sector 1.
In Sector 3, instead, he was quicker than Russell despite not running in Q3! (Where the track conditions were better).

🗒Notes on #AustralianGP
-Heroic Sainz WINS through a flawless race. Just 11 points behind VER despite skipping a weekend
-RBR didn’t impress all weekend and is nowhere without VER. The season is still open!
-McL got more points (27) than Merc (26) and Aston (25) did in 3 races!

POINTS AFTER 3 RACES
Ferrari is now just 4 points behind RBR
Big shakeups year after year: Ferrari went from being comfortably 1st in 2022, to 4th (‼️) in 2023, to close second in 2024
Ferrari’s consistent trait is its inconsistency, but Vasseur’s team seem to be reviving!📈

RACE PACE - Australian GP
(Considering each team’s faster driver)
For once, 🔴Ferrari was fastest!
🟠McL was close, though: ~0.1s/lap difference
🔵PER had over 0.5s/lap slower than SAI: VER would NOT have won easily
🟢Aston and Merc were matched
Thanks ‘Formula1 Stat Analysis’ for helping me with this one!🤝

🔴Bearman asked me for this analysis, and I couldn't refuse!😁
F2 Qualifying
Speed Trap (Vertical) vs Average Speed (Horizontal)
The dashed trend line shows that better average speed↔️higher top speed (Better aero efficiency and corner exit)
Two exceptions:⚫️Rodin and 🟠Campos teams showed large wing load differences!

How does F1 compare to F2?
Speed Trap: ~ +40km/h (+14%)
Average Speed: ~ +35km/h (+16%)
Huge difference!
Their speed advantage over the whole lap seems to be analogous to their top-speed advantage
We can conclude that F1 cars gain a lot... everywhere
And Ollie now knows it!

RACE PACE - Australian GP
🔴Ferrari was quickest, and just 0.05s/lap separated SAI and LEC!
🟠Norris was just 0.11s/lap behind though: McL can take the jump if the updates work
🟡Perez was half a second behind (damaged floor on his 2nd stint, though)
🟢ALO matched RUS
🟣Alpine's pace was terrible once again: OCO was slower than BOT despite pitting one time more. GAS had the worst pace
The 'Race Pace' analysis noscript is the first one I've restored, as I know how much you love this analysis!😁💻
