💡QUALIFYING DATA HIGHLIGHTS🏎
1) TOP SPEEDS:
McL locked out the front row despite having the lowest top speed! (-11km/h deficit to 'rocket' Haas)
Their excellent traction and mechanical grip made up for that. Drag might bite them in Spa, however...
Alpine 2nd highest top speed: a rare sight!
2) BEST SECTORS:
PIA and NOR were unmatched in the twisty sectors 2 and 3, but their low top speed held them back
in Sector 1 (where VER, SAI, and ALO were quickest).
3) CORNERING GRIP:
RedBull has a clear cornering edge: around 0.5g more than Ferrari and McL in the medium and high-speed corners.

The most dramatic Hungarian GP in YEARS! 😳
🟠 First McL 1-2 since Monza ‘21! But managing the drivers gets harder with big points on the table
🔵 3rd race in a row that VER hasn’t won: RB’s dominance has ended. Furious against the team’s strategy and development
🔴 Puzzling Ferrari performance: LEC was decent on mediums, and fastest on Hards
PER just 2 places behind VER despite starting at the back: he maximized his points.

Norris had the quickest pace in the Hungarian GP (if laps 68-69 are removed), but PIA was just 0.04s/lap behind! McLaren has never been this strong in the V6 era!
Lewis Hamilton was the quickest non-McL driver:
HAM/LEC/VER/SAI were close in pace (but over 0.2s slower than Norris).
PER 'just' 0.23s slower than VER despite being stuck behind slower cars: solid comeback.

Most teams were quicker in the #HungarianGP compared to 2023... but not RedBull! (and Sauber) ⚠️
VER totally dominated last year's race: he finished over half a MINUTE in front of NOR, and almost lapped LEC. This year, instead, he finished behind the Monegasque.
Ferrari's improvement was the largest, partly because their '23 pace was terrible (remember LEC on Hards on a cold track?).
McLaren's improvement looks even more incredible: they gained 8 TENTHS per lap to RedBull despite being already the 2nd fastest car last year!
Congrats to Andrea Stella for the extraordinary development! 👏
Something has gone terribly wrong at RedBull, it seems...

Spa should favor lower drag cars (Haas, but also Ferrari and RedBull) vs draggier ones (McL, Alpine).
While everyone was running max-downforce (Monaco spec) wings in Hungary, they will instead use low to medium-low load wings in Spa.
In spa, low overall drag and high efficiency (good downforce and modest drag) will be key.

Belgian GP Preview!
- Longest track;
- Sectors 1, 3: almost full-throttle;
- Sector 2: medium- and high-speed corners
⬇️
Aero efficiency (low drag, still enough downforce) needed to be quick, overtake, and manage the tyres.
⚪️Haas’ low drag should make them quick.
🟠McLaren’s high drag might bite them, but they might trim their wings more than most other teams (as the car has high downforce).
It’s gonna be be exciting!

It's still FP1, but VER is already looking like the clear favourite for pole (but he has a 10 places grid penalty).
Red Bull is using a much less loaded rear wing than last year: despite that, VER already took T11 full-throttle (289km/h)! 😳
He was 0.53s/lap quicker than PIA despite losing ~0.3s on the main full-throttle section alone (due to a much lower engine mode). His top speed was similar to PIA, however, thanks to the RB20's lower drag.
Compared to McL, the RB20 seems to have less drag (expected) and possibly more downforce (unexpected). And VER did 1:43.37 (0.9s faster than the '22 pole) using a very detuned engine mode...

LONG RUNS (FP2)
McLaren was quickest on both compounds:
-By 0.231s/lap on Mediums (NOR vs SAI)
-By 1.042s/lap (!) on Softs (PIA vs LEC)
McLaren's high-ish drag might hold them down a bit in qualifying, but their high downforce will make them the car to beat in the race!
🥇McL
🥈Ferrari
🥉RedBull (probably higher fuel / lower engine mode)
4️⃣Mercedes
5️⃣Aston

RUS has been disqualified from the Belgian GP, as his car was found to be 1.5kg below the mandated minimum (796.5kg vs 798kg). Such a difference is worth around ~0.05s/lap on a track like Spa, or slightly above 2s over a race distance. ⏱
After FP2, the team replaced the car’s new floor with the previous-spec one, as the former was inducing some severe bouncing: could the old floor have been lighter, and the team forgot to add appropriate ballast to his car after swapping them?
👍10👎2👀1
How much performance was Russell's 'missing mass' worth? 🤔
No more than 2.2s, but at least 0.4s, depending on whether it was missing since the start (e.g. wrong ballast), or due to high tyre wear.
- First case: he would have gained around half a tenth per lap, on all 44 laps: worth 2.2s over the race distance.
- Second case: he did 16 laps more on Hards than HAM, so we assume he lost that additional 1.5kg in the last 16 laps. If that case, his pace advantage would have grown from null on Lap 26 up to 0.05s on Lap 44: the time gained would have been far less (just 0.4s).
All else being equal, HAM would have caught him 3 laps sooner (Lap 38 instead of 41) in the first case, and 1 lap sooner (Lap 40) in the second case.
