At the opening race (Bahrain), 🟠NOR was 0.83s/lap slower than 🟡VER: thinking about a race-winning McL was a mirage, not to think about fighting for the championship!
Yet, in the Dutch GP NOR was 0.34s quicker than VER: McL's consistently successful upgrades will be remembered for years.
🔴LEC's pace matched VER's: just a 0.01s/lap difference! Well-deserved podium
🔴SAI almost matched PIA, while PER was 0.1s/lap slower
HAM and RUS used one more set, that's why their pace looks so good.

HOW🟠NORRIS LOST THE PLACE TO🟡VERSTAPPEN
👀
- VER used constant throttle (~20%).
- NOR, instead, quicky increased it up to 50%➡️His rear tyres likely spun (notice the rpm increase), forcing him to lift significantly over 50km/h.
The battle was lost there: he could go full-throttle ONE SECOND later than VER and reached 200km/h 0.4s later.
Driver mistake, fundamental car issue, or both?
- Could be a driver mistake: NOR has been having consistently bad starts, and worse on average than PIA.
- Could be a fundamental car issue: also PIA, on average, has had bad starts.
The telemetry suggests that NOR indeed made a mistake, but the car likely has some characteristics (Clutch? Energy deployment?) that make starts hard.
What's your opinion? 🤔

MONZA PREVIEW 🏁
Having low drag is more important than in any other track! 👀
Having a powerful engine (and efficient ERS) allows running slightly more loaded wings (stable braking, better cornering and tyre wear)
✅Low-drag cars (Haas, Ferrari) will gain from that
❌More draggy ones (McL, Aston) might struggle
McL will still be the favorite, but they won’t be as dominant as in Zandvoort!
What’s YOUR prediction? 🤔

In last year’s quali, Mercedes was slowest in the speed trap, while McLaren’s top speed varied significantly lap-to-lap (and was low overall).
Sauber was fastest on average, but Ferrari was close behind.
Haas reached the highest speed (351km/h) due to a tow.
In Monza, top speed is important for:
- overall performance;
- to make attacking/defending easier (which provides the team with more strategic freedom).
Sacrificing downforce too much in the search for straight-line speed, however, will impact tyre wear negatively (especially this year: C3-C5 tyres on a resurfaced track!).
Since last year, McL and Mercedes seemingly made progress concerning their top speeds, yet McL doesn’t expect Monza to suit their car well.
I expect Ferrari to be stronger than usual here compared to the other top teams.

Italian GP - Wing Thursday!
Ferrari’s and Mercedes’ rear wings are extremely low-downforce; Alpine’s one is… nonexistent! 😳
RedBull is using the rear wing with the trimmed upper plane (cost-saving measure) already tested in Spa.
McLaren and Aston went for slightly more downforce than Ferrari/Merc.
Mercedes’ DRS effect will be minimal with that very skinny upper plane.

📊 TELEMETRY DATA - FP1 Italian GP
TOP SPEEDS (In each team's fastest lap):
Williams and Sauber reached 347km/h: higher than anyone else (explaining BOT's P5).
ALB reached 349km/h on a slower lap... and it's still FP1!
Low RedBull top speed: their 'sawn-off' rear wing (cost-cutting measure) seems inefficient (but the engine could still be turned down).
Good top speed so far for McL.
BEST SECTORS:
- In S1 the fastest drivers were ALB (highest top speed) and HAM (lowest top speed): the former gained on the straight, the latter in the chicane.
- S2 (medium/high-speed corners): VER fastest, then the Ferrari and McL cars.
- S3: HAM quick again, then VER and BOT.

📊 FP2 DATA HIGHLIGHTS
⚫️Mercedes, 🟠McLaren, and 🔴Ferrari in a close fight for pole.
🟡RedBull's lacking top speed is currently hurting their performance (which cannot be explained by a lower PU mode alone)➡️Slowest car in Sector 1!
TOP SPEEDS:
- Williams reached 353km/h already... and it's just FP2!
- Ferrari and Mercedes have a 4km/h advantage over McLaren, which has a 4km/h advantage over RedBull (lowest top speed by far).

MINISECTORS:

BEST SECTORS:
- PIA was quickest in S1 and S2, but lost 0.23s to HAM in S3 alone.
- Ferrari and Mercedes struggled in S1; RedBull was the slowest car there.

LONG RUNS - #ItalianGP
All drivers of the top5 teams used Mediums
🥇RUS quickest ✅
🥈PER +0.261s/lap
🥉PIA +0.552s/lap
Ferrari seems less competitive in the long runs than over a single-lap.
VER/LEC/HAM did the longest stints (11 push laps).
Colapinto was 3rd quickest! (Check the reply to this post).
RedBull usually runs more fuel and less power than others in the long runs: PER’s stint is very promising (as VER is usually a few tenths quicker as well).

Colapinto’s stint (5 push laps on softs) would have been impressive even in case it was a glory run.
HAM, PIA, NOR, PER had the freshest set at the start of the first push lap (5-lap old).
The opposite for LEC (10 laps) and SAI (11 laps).

🏁 ItalianGP - QUALIFYING DATA HIGHLIGHTS
1) TOP SPEEDS 🚀
- McL locked out the front row despite having the WORST top speed in a track where straight-line performance is crucial: that's a testament to their grip!
- Ferrari's superior top speed (+4km/h vs McL, +3 vs Merc/RedBull) will be valuable to attack/defend in the race.
- Aston reached 353km/h.
2) LONGITUDINAL AND LATERAL GRIP 🛞
- Ferrari reached around 6g under braking. McL and Mercedes were close.
- Mercedes reached the highest lateral acceleration.
3) NOR VS RUS HEAD-TO-HEAD ⚔️
- RUS gained steadily in the first part of the lap: 0.2s advantage before Turn 4.
- NOR inverted the trend, gaining almost 0.3s in turns 4 to 7.
I hope you enjoyed the qualifying in my home country! 🇮🇹

As an Italian Ferrari supporter, watching Leclerc win my home race was priceless! 🤩🐎
Pitting him right after the McL was a mistake imho, but Ferrari’s excellent wear allowed them to make up for that ✅
