LONG RUNS - #ItalianGP

All drivers of the top5 teams used Mediums
🥇RUS quickest
🥈PER +0.261s/lap
🥉PIA +0.552s/lap

Ferrari seems less competitive in the long runs than over a single-lap.
VER/LEC/HAM did the longest stints (11 push laps).

Colapinto was 3rd quickest! (Check the reply to this post).

RedBull usually runs more fuel and less power than others in the long runs: PER’s stint is very promising (as VER is usually a few tenths quicker as well).

Colapinto’s stint (5 push laps on softs) would have been impressive even in case it was a glory run.

HAM, PIA, NOR, PER had the freshest set at the start of the first push lap (5-lap old).

The opposite for LEC (10 laps) and SAI (11 laps).

🏁 ItalianGP - QUALIFYING DATA HIGHLIGHTS

1) TOP SPEEDS 🚀
- McL locked out the front row despite having the WORST top speed in a track where straight-line performance is crucial: that's a testament to their grip!
- Ferrari's superior top speed (+4km/h vs McL, +3 vs Merc/RedBull) will be valuable to attack/defend in the race.
- Aston reached 353km/h.

2) LONGITUDINAL AND LATERAL GRIP 🛞
- Ferrari reached around 6g under braking. McL and Mercedes were close.
- Mercedes reached the highest lateral acceleration.

3) NOR VS RUS HEAD-TO-HEAD ⚔️
- RUS gained steadily in the first part of the lap: 0.2s advantage before Turn 4.
- NOR inverted the trend, gaining almost 0.3s in turns 4 to 7.

I hope you enjoyed the qualifying in my home country! 🇮🇹
What’s your prediction for the race? 🤔

As an Italian Ferrari supporter, watching Leclerc win my home race was priceless! 🤩🐎

Pitting him right after the McL was a mistake imho, but Ferrari’s excellent wear allowed them to make up for that

Italian GP RACE PACE

Charles_Leclerc was 0.17s/lap quicker than VER... despite using one less set of tyres! 🔥

VER was almost 6 tenths slower than PIA. It's incredible how the tide has turned: at season start, the efficient RB20 would have dominated the more draggy McL in Monza.

Magnussen's pace was super: pitted just once, yet had the 10th-best pace!

McLaren's advantage over Mercedes was almost 0.4s/lap.

Mercedes' advantage over RedBull was at least 0.2s/lap.

Top Speed per Lap:

Verstappen seemingly said in an interview that they had to turn the engine down due to an issue.

He had the lowest top speed in the race ('just' 345km/h), which seems to confirm that.

Some positive stats about Ferrari!🏎🏇
(Credits: Vanja from F1Technical)

- Ferrari has already outscored their 2023 season (407 vs 406 points) with 6 races less (and a fiercer competition).
- Same for LEC (217 vs 206); SAI is just 16 points behind his '23 season.
The last time Ferrari won both Monza and Monaco was in 1979 (and won the noscript)... yes, not even Schumacher did that!

McL looks favourite for the WCC, but we might be in for a 3-way fight if Red Bull solves their issues and Ferrari's strong form continues!

The ItalianGP was less than 1km/h slower than the fastest F1 race of all time! 🤯

2003: 247.585km/h (Record)
2024: 246.680km/h

Leclerc completed the 53 laps in just 21.3s more than Schumacher.
The '24 cars were way quicker in qualifying, and less so in the race (due to the refueling). MSC could hammer very low laptimes for longer, however, achieving a better average pace.

LEC was 2.44s/lap quicker ON AVERAGE than last year on the same M-H strategy (thanks to the resurfacing). Had he been 0.4s/lap quicker than that, he would have beat the record!

QUALIFYING PERFORMANCE
(Sessions in which Intermediate/Wet tyres were used are excluded)

🟠 McLaren did the fastest lap in qualifying once again, but they didn't dominate as in Zandvoort: their margin over Mercedes and Ferrari was minimal.

🔴Ferrari's qualifying performance has been terrible since Canada: Baku will tell whether Monza was an outlier or the start of a new dawn.

🟢Aston Martin's performance is slowly getting worse after a decent start.

MONZA QUALI IMPROVEMENT (2024 vs 2023)

📈Gained the most: Alpine (very slow in '23), McL, Haas.

📉Gained the least: Ferrari (pole in '23), RedBull, Williams (ALB was P6 in '23 quali).

Ferrari greatly improved their race pace, however!

1.082s average improvement (resurfacing helped; race pace improved even more!).

Did you know that by using less loaded wings teams can save almost 300hp (of drag) at 300km/h at Monza compared to Zandvoort? 🤯

In Ferrari’s case: Less loaded 🟣rear wings and 🔵beam wings ➡️ +20km/h terminal speed with DRS, and +30km/h without!

Drag (no DRS): -25%

Drag power saved:
~270hp at 300km/h,
~400hp at the top speed (more than the power of an F3 car!)

As expected, the difference is higher when DRS is not being used, as DRS partially negates the drag difference between the two wings.

How is it possible that Charles Leclerc reached the highest top speed of the 2020 season with the least powerful engine and a draggy car? 🤔

Answer: the race top speed is a terrible predictor of engine power

🛠My approach for fellow performance engineers:

1) Estimate engine power: check how quickly the car increases its speed (longitudinal acceleration) for any given speed. Use the lowest gear which allows full-throttle ➡️ Traction and drag are not factors

2) Estimate drag: Once power is estimated, use the car's top speed in free air to compute its drag coefficient

That's why you cannot use the top speed in the race to evaluate that: LEC had a very strong tow and was running a tiny rear wing ➡️ drag was reduced massively, which hid his lack of power!

Two proofs of that:
- Ferrari lost 14km/h to '19, even though the '20 #F1 car was more draggy and much less powerful!
- The highest top speed was reached in Spa and not in Monza, even though even less loaded wings are used there.

I hope you've learnt something today! 😁

Despite the post-Imola hit in performance, Red Bull remains the fastest car in qualifying over the season - yet McL has been quicker since then!

Ferrari, compared to last year:
-Slightly worse in qualifying;
-Much better race pace!

Mercedes has been only slightly slower than Ferrari on average; their advantage over the next-best car (Aston) is massive.

Piastri has completed all the racing laps so far: 970/970 👌(No one matched him!)

🟠McLaren has covered more laps than anyone else📈
The top team which completed the fewest was... 🔵RedBull! Even VER did fewer laps than both McL and Mercedes drivers.📉

GAS did 145 laps less than PIA: more than two races!
