How is it possible that Charles Leclerc reached the highest top speed of the 2020 season with the least powerful engine and a draggy car? 🤔 Answer: the race top speed is a terrible predictor of engine power 🛠My approach for fellow performance engineers:…
Two proofs of that:
- Ferrari lost 14km/h to '19, even though the '20 #F1 car was more draggy and much less powerful!
- The highest top speed was reached in Spa and not in Monza, even though even less loaded wings are used there.

I hope you've learnt something today! 😁

Despite the post-Imola hit in performance, Red Bull remains the fastest car in qualifying over the season - yet McL has been quicker since then!

Ferrari, compared to last year:
-Slightly worse in qualifying;
-Much better race pace!

Mercedes has been only slightly slower than Ferrari on average; their advantage over the next-best car (Aston) is massive.

Piastri has completed all the racing laps so far: 970/970 👌(No one matched him!)

🟠McLaren has covered more laps than anyone else📈
The top team which completed the fewest was... 🔵RedBull! Even VER did fewer laps than both McL and Mercedes drivers.📉

GAS did 145 laps less than PIA: more than two races!

BAKU PREVIEW

🛠It requires an EXTREME aerodynamic compromise:
- 'Monaco-like' Sectors 1 and 2 ➡️ Maximum downforce needed.
- Sector 3 consists of the longest full-throttle section on the calendar ➡️ Minimal drag required.

Consequently, medium- and low-load wings can both work. 👌

Ferrari won both Monaco and Monza: I expect them to perform well in Baku, which is a combination of both!

What's YOUR prediction? 🤔

An example of how wildly different rear wings can be in Baku! 🤯 (2019 - Renaults vs Williams)

Cars like Alpine (which generates excessive drag compared to the relatively modest power of its engine) will have to sacrifice either grip or straight-line speed.

Azerbaijan GP - Wing Thrusday!

McLaren is running the most loaded rear wing.

RedBull, Ferrari, Aston are sacrificing a bit of downforce to gain straight line speed on Baku’s super-long main straight.

Mercedes, Williams, Racing Bulls did it too, but to a higher degree.

Alpine’s wing is non-existent… the same as in Monza! 😳

Honestly I cannot see how they can use it in Baku, I expect them to switch to a more loaded one throughout the weekend.

TOP SPEEDS - FP1
(Considering each team's quickest lap)

Aston 345km/h
Williams 343
...
Sauber 340
Red Bull 339
McL/Ferrari/Mercedes/RacingBulls/Alpine 337
...
Haas 334

Aston's top speed is 3km/h higher than their top speed in Monza FP1!
The DRS zone has been extended this year 🚀

📊 FP2 DATA HIGHLIGHTS

Big top-speed differences, excellent 🔴Ferrari cornering and Red Bull traction... and HUGE sandbagging from 🟠NOR and 🔵VER on the main straight! 🔎(ERS turned way down ).

🥇LEC [Soft]
🥈PER +0.006s [Soft]
🥉HAM +0.066s [Soft]

1) BEST SECTORS:
- LEC quickest overall thanks to an excellent S1. McL struggled here.
- Red Bull unmatched in S2.
- Aston's excellent top speed made STR quickest in Sector 3... where NOR (the only driver on Mediums) and VER were SLOWEST!

2) TOP SPEEDS:
- Large difference between fastest (Aston, 345km/h) and slowest (Alpine, 336) cars.
- Big differences between teammates, too:
PIA 342km/h vs NOR 335;
PER 341 vs VER 337.

3) MINISECTORS:
- PER had excellent traction: check the exit of T2, T4, T12, and T16.
- LEC's cornering in Sectors 1 and 2 was unmatched.
- HAM gained in T13-T15 and out of the last corner (but LEC/PER were quicker at the end of the straight).

PRACTICE 2 - LONG RUNS:

Russell was quickest: his gap to SAI was over half a second. The Hards (which RUS used) could be a better racing tyre... but no doubt that Mercedes' pace is looking great.

PERFORMANCE IN QUALIFYING

⬅️ Worse / Better ➡️
⬇️ Lower / Higher top speed ⬆️

🔴'King of Baku' Charles Leclerc got his 4th pole in a row despite a modest top speed (same for Mercedes, Williams, and Haas).

🟠McL had the lowest one! Proof that grip is more important than straight-line speed in Baku qualifying, but they could struggle to attack/defend tomorrow.

🔵RedBull can be aggressive, exploiting their +3km/h top speed advantage vs Ferrari and Mercedes and +6km/h over McLaren.

What's your prediction for the race? 🤔
🔥101
Norris reached consistently higher top speeds (~4km/h more) than Piastri in qualifying: this should aid his recovery drive!

PIA's top speed was the worst on the grid!

His additional downforce, however, could help with tyre wear.

(Laps with a tow were excluded.)

Piastri surprised Leclerc under braking getting a well-deserved win! 👏

McL’s excellent T16 exit and less loaded DRS plane made him gain up to the middle of the straight. 🛠

SAI-PER crash helped McL get a sizeable lead in the WCC. 💥

10 points for Williams. 🔥

BEA: first in history to drive 2 races with 2 teams getting points in both! 👌(Keeping a 7-times WDC behind for many laps).

What’s YOUR opinion? 🤔

💡McLaren has a "Mini-DRS", which acts on top of the "Flexy wing"
- Wing flex: McL > Ferrari >> RedBull
- McL has a never-seen-before lift of the upper plane leading edge: it's as if the DRS opens partially at high speed, providing a further advantage.

The effect is measurable: McL had the highest top speed when the DRS was inactive despite being slowest when the DRS was open (Data from quali).

Is this legal? 🤔
- The flexy wing is, as it passed the FIA's load tests. A wing that flexes are 'against the spirit of the rules', but until the load tests change to avoid that such a thing is perfectly ok.
- I'm not sure about the deformation of the DRS plane: I expect Ferrari to protest that, but the outcome is hard to predict.

Race Pace!

3 teams, 4 drivers within 0.03s/lap: remarkable convergence in performance under stable rules!

NOR was flying on fresher tyres!

RUS's pace in the last 10 laps was impressive, as his last pit was on lap 12.

VER could not aim to the FL point on new Softs due to the VSC.
