Summary of answer:
If a person intends to do the mustahabb action, that will not be acceptable for the obligatory action. If a person fasts with the intention of 'Ashura, that will not be acceptable as making up for a missed Ramadan fast,

but if he intends to make up the missed Ramadan fast and does that on the day of 'Ashura, then his making up the missed fast will be valid, and there is the hope that he will also attain the reward for 'Ashura, according to some scholars.

FASTING ON ASHOORA DAY

Ibn ‘Abbâs رضي الله عنه said:

“Be different than the Jews and fast the 9th and 10th day.”

[Narrated by at-Tahâwî and it was authenticated by ibn Rajab, Sulaymân al-‘Alwân, Abû ‘Alî al-Hasanî and ‘Abdul ‘Azîz al-Khudayr]

Shaykh Abû ‘Abdillâh al-Hâshimî said:

Fasting ‘Âshûrâ’ are in 2 levels:

Fasting the 10th alone.
Fasting the 9th with the 10th, and this is more complete and better.

As for [the Hadîth of] fasting the day before and the day after (meaning the 11th), then this is not correct, as it is not confirmed by the Prophet ‎ﷺ or the Sahâbah رضي الله عنهم.

Those Who Cannot fast Ashura.png

"One way to make up for what you have missed out on of reward is to fast whatever you are able to of Muharram, the sacred month of Allah, because of its virtue, as Muslim (1163) narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger ﷺ said: “The best fast after Ramadan is Muharram, the sacred month of Allah."

With regard to expiation of sins, that may be attained by renewing and perfecting your repentance, and constantly asking Allah for forgiveness.

And Allah knows best."

Also, sisters who cannot fast due to obedience to husband, do remember that obedience to him is obligatory and obligation weighs more than Sunnah, mustahabb actions. May our Lord be pleased with you.

So be sincere in your actions, be true to Allah, hoping for the best of rewards.

Befriend the Quran

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Prophet ( peace be upon him) said: “Fasting and the Quran will intercede for a person on the Day of Resurrection. Fasting will say: O Lord, I kept him from his food and desires during the day; let me intercede for him. And the Quran will say: I kept him from sleeping during the night; let me intercede for him. And they will be allowed to intercede.”

Al-Baqarah 2:10

In their hearts is a disease (of doubt and hypocrisy) and Allah has increased their disease. A painful torment is theirs because they used to tell lies.
